Star Wars The Mandalorian "Chapter 22 Guns for Hire" REVIEW

Comments

Alrighty caught up. Just wanna say I love ur reviews it’s so cool to hear other opinions and experiences esp from someone who’s experienced more of the larger universe. I’ve watched Mando and the original trilogy and have general knowledge of other stuff from research and video essays but haven’t seen any of it directly. Everyone is gonna have differing experiences and opinions. That being said, for mine, I rly didn’t like this episode! I love detective stuff, but this is one of the worst Star Wars handlings of droid rights and autonomy since maybe what I’ve heard about Solo. It wasn’t fun to be watching our mains beating up and policing an enslaved class, whether or not they were originally made to work for the empire. Din’s PTSD doesn’t excuse that, doesn’t excuse harassing workers until they revolt. Not only that but then they go to a bar called literally The Resistor and it’s not only not a bar for droid Revolution and solidarity, it’s a bar that helps them to quell the insurrections because it looks bad on them and “oh no what if humans don’t want to use us we love being used for all their labor.” The sticky questions and politics are dystopian and horrible and yet viewed through a comedic lense or through the lense of our mains being the heroes and being in the right, despite Din’s hate for droids always being framed as a character flaw in the past, something to work on. Beyond that, Bo getting the saber at the end via a technicality made me want to pull my hair out. I think she should have it, I think her being leader tracks and makes sense, but this season hasn’t engaged enough with its own complicated ideas and her messy and complicated past to make it feel earned and triumphant and not like she’s getting things handed to her. Thts literally what happened here she didn’t need to fight for it it was handed to her. And then Din has been a side character, and he doesn’t need to be leader doesn’t need some grand thing, but we should still be with him, seeing his conflict about keeping the darksaber, or why his upbringing means he doesn’t care. The writers summed up all arcs for his development and growth in quick and hand wavy ways that have done a disservice to him and their own narrative and as a writer watching this it pisses me off. It is the adventure show, but via its adventures it’s built up a rich and complicated world that it had the perfect opportunity to explore this season. And it hasn’t. This episode was character regression, neoliberal politics and and intense pro-slave propaganda, and a further step in a messy and weak narrative that has made me disappointed in a show I used to love. It feels bad when I can accurately say Detroit Become Human did something better and deeper than this did. And that sucks.
