Star Wars The Mandalorian "The Convert" Chapter 19 REVIEW

Wait, did the Mandalorian become Star Wars Andor.

Star Wars The Mandalorian "The Convert" Chapter 19 REVIEW

Comments

This episode, when it came out, made me really mad HHDBD I am not tuned into larger Star Wars political history so in some ways I wasn’t able to look as closely at that, but to me it emphasized a narrative messiness with this season. Yes, mando is a fun adventure show, but it’s also always had strong through threads and overarching plots through all that, and this season had been set up for a really interesting exploration of Mandalorian culture and the clashes and history therein, as well as Grogu and Din being reunited and Din struggling with his faith and the saber, etc. But this episode was totally unrelated, after an already weak first two episodes from a narrative standpoint, this one felt like a gut punch. Not only that, but the Pershing story in my opinion was also not written well. It didn’t feel like it was engaged with with any nuance, the arc was predictable and spelled out for us in the “previously on” clips at the start that showed us Elia never had good intentions and is still working with the Moff. With that, it just made everything feel boring and frustrated and pointless. There’s a lot it brought up that would be interesting to explore, but it didn’t feel relevant to the show it’s within, and wasn’t tied to our characters at all or give any further look at where the season would be going. Now six episodes in, I understand the direction it was going, but the execution, as with every other plot focus, was handled messily and without care in a way that made it feel shallow and frustrating to me.

Yup. I did as well :)

It is def a worldbuilding setup episode but I liked it quite a lot for its worldbuilding. Something DESPERATELY needed between episode 6 and 7 with the New Republic

I loved seeing Omid Abtahi as Dr. Pershing! He's a character who's always intrigued me. It was fascinating to experience post-Imperial Coruscant through his eyes. I was also very intrigued by the amnesty program, which sounds like a good thing; and the Reintegration Institute, which does not sound fun at all. I really enjoyed what they did with this episode.

Katy O'Brian's small role in the previous season getting expanded into co-starring in this episode was fun.
