"I'm Done with JK Rowling": Post-Mortem

Hey everyone; so as promised in my update video, here's the first of my patreon-exclusive post-mortem videos. My plan is, going forward, for every major video essay release, I'm going to try to release videos like this where I talk about or have a convo with someone about the video; either with someone I worked on the video with, is relevant to the video/was in the video/ or someone who I think could provide cool additional context. So for this video one, Aranock and I sit down to talk about some stuff about earning anger as marginalized folks, responses to the video both from well-meaning cis folks and antitrans folks, as well as Harry Potter trauma and more. We get into some tough topics so ALL the content warnings from the Rowling video apply, but I think it was a really good convo, so I hope you enjoy. Let me know if you like this type of content or not going forward, and how I can improve it <3 I'd love your thoughts.

It's so unfortunate that people can accuse you of taking a "hardline" stance. If we were talking about racial bigotry or gay rights, nobody but an idiot would declare a stance against bigotry to be "hardline". Unfortunate that bigotry against trans people has not yet reached that level for some people.

A bit late to comment, but I just wanted to say thank you so much for everything you do. As a trans person, I’ve always felt so seen and valued by your videos. I just cited this video and your “trans bullying” update video for a college project Im doing on transgender equality and and social media. Keep up the good work, but remember to take care of yourself!! I know things have been really rough lately. Take your time, watch some Star Trek, and do what you need to do to stay healthy ❤️ sending all my love and support!!

Love this kinds of video! I'm still watching it but I decided to comment a few things before I finish, just so I won't forgot about it later: 1. The first video was super important and meaningful. I'm Brazilian and a booktuber I really like decided to make a hour-long video on JK Rowling, and he cited your video a bunch of times. It was a interesting crossover to see, and it helps to bring visibility to a lot of people who don't understand English. I'm very happy you decided to do this post-mortem and I'm very thankful by the ideas and discussions you had. I have a lot to think about. 2. As a jewish and brazilian cis woman, I can say I only saw the antissemitism on JK's work after engaging more with content made by trans people. I was way too young when I started to read the books and watch the movies and I didn't even understand myself as a jewish person yet. My father and older brother didn't catch it either - we're so used to some antissemitic representations that a goblin was the least of the worries. I believe they saw this characterization in the context of a book that talks about acceptance and belonging and thought she was just reproducing a steriotype she didn't even understood. Now we know that's not the case. Anyway, this long comment was just to say that I'm super grateful for trans creators - and you, Jessie, in particular. Not only you all have been super detailed, are extremely inteligent and articulated people, but you're very compassionate as well. You're really changing my life through your content. And I also want to thank you for always including jewish people on this discussion: it's terrifying to see what is happening in US and see how it ressonates around the world, how the antissemitic discourse that once was hidden, now feels comfortable to show itself in plain sight. My friends are mostly christian and they never believed me when I say there's antissemitism in Brazil, they thought I was overreacting. Now they can see things a bit clearer, unfortunately. But having trans people talking about it, including us in the conversation, helps more people to open their eyes and see it's terrifying. I still have A LOT to learn about being an ally, but please know we stand together. Biggots want to divide us but they'll only push us closer together!

Jessie, I support you; being a member of your Discord server has been a real beacon of light in this darkness; long story short, I very rarely can watch Youtube videos longer than 20 minutes; the only one I was able to watch was the Sex in Star Trek, that's because I live and breathe Star Trek. My final opinion on that devil Rowling is,” Fuck you, greedy asshole woman.” No wonder she is able to thrive since the new Prime Minister of UK who is anti-LGBT.

I love the frog metaphor!

Just finished listening to this converstation, and I got to say that it was so good. I just so glad that I found you're channel Jessie, as not only is your content amazing, but it is helping me really put into words alot of my own feelings about my own gender. Also now you have to introduce me to yet another awesome person! Just seriously, I will keep supporting you as long as I can. And soon as I'm earning more I will support Aranock as well!

You both pointed out a very important difficulty in community building: we are all communicating from where we are, and we can try to imagine what others’ lived experiences are like, but we can never live any other person’s experiences, or truly feel exactly what they feel. One example is PTSD, in its (unfortunately) many forms and sources/causes. We can be there for each other, but we can’t go through exactly what another person is going through. This is a big reason why it is so important to be open to listening and learning from each other to form any kind of real connection—while at the same time understanding we can never see the world from anyone else’s eyes but our own. Still—it is so worth the effort to really try! Thank you for doing the work to give that opportunity to fans like me and the rest of your audience.

I am so extremely frustrated that videos like ‘I’m done with jk Rowling’ don’t gain traction. You have such a nuanced and valuable take, and it takes longer to explain than the algorithm allows

Really enjoyed this discussion, especially the topic of performance vs “authenticity.” That’s a question I have struggled with most of my life, especially since persona/performance was framed as dishonesty to me when I was young. Looking back having figured out (as much as I can claim to have fully figured out anything about myself) that I am nonbinary at 35, and only coming out as pan a few years prior, I wonder how much my fear of artifice came from having to perform so much for the conservative home environment I grew up in. Was I so afraid of not “being myself correctly/enough” because on some level I was performing straight and cis even for myself? Is that why, as I get more comfortable with myself, that I feel less and less concern about having different modes, mindsets, and personas for different situations? I have such things to ponder today!

This was a great talkback, and I loved hearing the dialogue especially around the intersections. EDIT: Also at the end when the two of you talk about hating being called "brave" because it's not about being brave, it's about the obligation to speak. OOF. That's... yeah. That resonated a lot. Thank you for those words.

Hate is a lot of people's entire personality that might take another generation to help with. I hope you all have punching bags in your homes!

Done with her for now. Just watch. Her evil bs will get highlighted in national convoz once again... She's clearly unreasonable and not willing to change. If that were the case it would have happened like a decade ago or some crap. JK becoming a nice person is more ridiculous than MTG becoming a nice person lol. Anyone waiting to piss on their graves one day must get in line behind me!
