Yeah I def understand all that. I don't mind the Aliens ripoff but the Hemmer death... ehhh

I enjoyed the first half of the episode. Yeah, it was an Alien rip-off (nowhere near enough of a spin in there to be an homage), but you know what? That's OK. There's a reason so many properties have crossed over with the xenomorphs and that's because we want to see how the characters we're attached to deal with that kind of utterly horrific survival scenario. I'm not gonna get my cheeks clenched just because Paramount had to file the serial numbers off. The reason the last half of the episode didn't work for me was because my gf and I realized that the last of the redshirts had gone down, and the structure of the story the writers were aping meant there had to be another death, and damn near everyone on the cast has plot armor due to their TOS adventures. And that meant it was going to be not-Newt (unlikely with all the recent kid death), La'an (uh-huh, right) or Hemmer (fuck!). So his death wasn't that much of a shock, and yeah, killing off the disabled character to deepen the character of an abled regular is never a good look. And finding out that Hemmer was meant to die from the start somehow makes it worse. This wasn't the actor wanting out because he got a better gig or he was allergic to the make-up, this character the show was lauding in terms of representation was created as disposable. It feels like Hugh in PIC S1 all over again or Adira and Gray over in DISCO - the TPTB can flap their lips all they like about representation (either literal or metaphorical) but they don't actually *care* about these characters. Or at least not enough to regularly give them arcs where they're the most important person in them. I'm glad that Bruce Horak will be back (and hey, we didn't see a body, so they can always technobabble Hemmer back!), but, this death still just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Agreed

Re:Sam K, It feels like there is a lot of people coming completely unwound or turning on each other under pressure that I just don't expect to see. That's not a tool you can pull out of the bag every time and not have it wear out.
