Dissecting If Being Sexist To JK Rowling Is Morally Justifiable

YouTuber Vaush raised a question... is it morally justifiable to sexist to transphobes?

Dissecting If Being Sexist To JK Rowling Is Morally Justifiable

Just finished watching this video. I think this is a very fair take and I agree with all your points, Jessie. The way I see it is that this isn’t about whether it‘s a problem to be mean to JK. The point is that using this type of language is harmful in and of itself and using it reinforces the structures of opression. In the long run it won‘t benefit anyone but the people who already have all the power.

Turned on Vaush and he's watching your video on livestream now. I thought you were really fair and brought up good points. I am not on social media in general and don't engage in twitter battles, and probably naively, I am hoping to see Vaush listen to your video in good faith. I do think Fair Use encourages people to react andy before listening to a complex argument and in general the meta-response world is not best for conversation or mental health. But I enjoyed your video and wanted to say so!

Almost posted in the YouTube comments and was like... I have better things to do than fight strangers on the internet all day. Fan of you and Vaush. His debates with transphobes have provided me with almost as many concise and thoughtful ways of discussing queer issues with people as you and other trans creators have. And I see both of your perspectives. Tough for me to say Vaush is totally in the wrong when writer Andrew Wheeler *doesn't* go misogynist and still incurs Joanne's wrath followed by the pile on of her troll army: https://bleedingcool.com/comics/when-jk-rowling-quote-tweeted-andrew-wheeler/ AW: "You are empowering far right forces that endanger all women and queer people with misleading and hateful rhetoric. It's not too late for you to walk back from the dark path you've found yourself on. Please listen to the people who are asking you to lead with love." JK: "Far right to little boy wearing a dress: take that off, it means you're not a real man. Gender identity theorists: wanting to wear dresses means you're really a girl. Radical feminists: boys can wear dresses, you look great! Which of these two positions are most alike, Andrew?" It is difficult to reconcile my desire to reach out to folks with love and nuance (I'm currently painstakingly creating an essay / research document to share with a friend who's fallen into TERF Twitter in the past year or so in the hope of reaching him), with the fact that Joanne and most anyone in her rabid audience at this point is NEVER going to come around no matter what language is used. Part of me appreciates his choice to just be mean to her, though I wish to holy heck he hadn't done a misogyny here. Thanks for all that you do!

*looks at the thumbnail* Yes, this is about the Vaush thing. I have... thoughts on that. Looking forward to hearing yours in a bit.
