Earthsea & The Magic of Transgender Names (ft. Dominic Noble)

What is in a name? Names are how we identify each other, how we identify our self… our sense of personhood. Light a light, flickering in the dark.

This is a beautiful piece of your work. You reveal these parts of yourself that are so close to my own lived experience. I am so glad to learn that you came to understand yourself at 20, and made the courageous decision to transition, and to live proudly. I can only wish that I had your courage at that age. Just like with your Olympic Futurama essay, this one has me reflecting on a lot of thoughts. I have to thank you for that. After all, looking in the mirror every now and again is healthy for the soul. <3

Thank you for sharing part of yourself with us, Jessie. <3

Gotta tell the truth, it threw me more when I learned her last name... I only knew her as Jessie, so when her deadname came up in a video it was like "yeah, she seems more like a Jessie 🤷‍♂️" But when I saw her surname on a stream she did I totally did a double-take. I don't know why, it's not like I thought her actual last name was Gender lol. ;)

Between you and Vee I'm thinking I really need to read these books.

...and I just realised I had apparently actually managed to avoid learning your deadname until now. Welp. 😶

Thank you. I think I need something like this at the moment. Will watch in a few hours.

wow, loved these books for years, but I never thought of this. I tend to take things on face value so love when my eyes are opened to other meanings

Another great and thoughtful video. "The Tombs of Atuan" is my favourite Earthsea book too, it was in my parents' bookshelf and I read it as a child and was freaked out by the malevolent tombs (and the elaborate map of the tombs sowed in me my love of mazes). The book also impressed on my young self the power of true names and this concept still resonates with me (o:

This is great. I just started rereading EarthSea last night.
