Why TERFs Misunderstand "The Handmaid's Tale"

The Handmaid's Tale seems like it's perfect for a TERF reading, but often, TERFs misinterpret what the show is actually about.

indeed, it's very hard to empathize with someone who actively villfiies you. And I by no means blame anyone who can't, you shouldn'tt have to empathize with an abuser. I just do cause it's who I am, but I understand not, and it's by no means healthy for me when I do it.

Thank you. I love the costumes haha

Welp. That was a grim watch. I decidedly did not watch the show, and won't, as I know perfectly well what it would do to my mental health. Even the short snippets in this video are disturbing enough. That said, I agree with the point that abuse against TERFs is, while emotionally understandable in a way, at the very least not good activism. Though it is hard for me to really empathise with TERFs in a sense, as I literally cannot understand them, and I have yet to see a gender crit to not argue in bad faith. The mental gymnastics involved in constantly willfully misinterpreting everything trans people say about their lives remind me of a religious cult more than a political movement. To TERFs it seems to be a version of the gnostic battle of light versus dark, with trans women the very embodiment of pure evil, in some ways worse than cis men. So yes, I try very hard not to de-humanise TERFs, but it's hard to actually empathise with someone who so violently de-humanises oneself.

Andrew, I think you got it right, but would add "...but often TERFs *purposely* misinterpret..."

"...but often TERFs misinterpret..." could be the their official Motto.
