2021-05-31 04:06:57 +0000 UTCSadly, the closing quote, "Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do or die." is the "Beam me up, Scotty." of military poetry. The original text from Charge of the Light Brigade ends "Ours is but to do _and_ die". Because the poem is a sincere celebration of the light brigade getting ordered on a pointless suicide mission by an idiot, and doing it anyways despite knowing better ways to actually accomplish their mission, because unthinking obedience was the greatest virtue for soldiers.
