PREMIERE: 'Wonder Woman 1984' Is a Moral Failure

Wonder Woman 1984 isn't just a bad movie, it was a moral failure, refusing to engage with the issues that it itself brings up and, as a result, becomes unintentionally offensive and reinforces terrible ideas. So let's discuss how Wonder Woman 1984 failed to be inclusive, meaningful and diverse.

Jessie, I haven't seen the movie yet, so I'm only responding to your episode. I very much appreciated that you stood against the abuse and rape of males. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Generally I like your analytical ideas Jessie and I think you have pretty good, solid moral instincts in the main (though I can't support your favoring "beat em up movies"). Nonetheless, something Hannah might agree with me is that I think you'd be a LOT more effective in influencing others if you'd get WAY more concise. I'd like it if you'd make each of your points in a much more compact way. Also if you could display a graphic with a condensed statement of each point as you make it, and then summarize your points at the end I'd be able to follow your logic more easily. Finally, is it my imagination or are you speeding up your videos? I really wish you would not do that, that is really, really, really frustrating and annoying. It makes them unlistenable for me. I'd prefer you let people speed it up if they want to instead of making that choice for them ahead of time. I always have to slow down your video to follow your very complex, and dense material.

Entirely fair! I did try to add in my thoughts on what I thought worked in the film, like Maxwell Lord and the early scenes, so it wasn't all "Thing Bad". And honestly, I did consider not doing the video at all because I agree, I don't like doing "thing bad videos" either, I'd rather talk about things that I like or worked for me on teh whole, but I ended up feeling there was a lot in this movie I had to talk about. But I def hear and it's not a style I want to do more often, but every once and a while I think it's warrented. And yeah, female films do get a higher standard unfortauntly, though I do hope I critique male-led films as well.

You definitely have legitimate criticism, and I get how WW84 was on many levels disappointing. Still not a fan of this take-down video format though. Nuanced or not, it was still over 50 minutes of listening to Why Thing Is Bad. Also I can't quite shake the feeling WW84 gets put under a much more critical lens than a 'male' movie would have been, by all of us. We are used to men making and writing Mediocre Super Hero Movies With Very Questionable Moral Messages You Shouldn't Really Think Too Closely About, but when a woman makes one, it's immediately a failure. Hm.
