Star Trek Discovery "That Hope is You Part 2" | Season 3 Finale!

Star Trek Discovery boldly went into it's finale with "That Hope is You  Part 2". But did the USS Discovery crash and "burn" as Michael Burnham  took on the Emerald Chain... or did the wrap up to The Burn end up being  underwhelming? Find out in my review of "That Hope is You Part 2", the  season 3 finale of Star Trek Discovery.

Me too, though I wonder how that will mesh with Strange New World's episodic take

Indeed, I agree about retrofiting Disco, seems like it's due consider the extorior chagned. And yeah, I am do glad Vance is a good guy haha. \

The whole ending felt like empty calories in the end. Trek doesn't do serialised writing well, not really, not even close to other series like Babylon 5, Galactica or The Expanse. Or DS9 for that matter (though that still was quite episodic, IMHO). So I watch for the characters: love them. Kinda hate the writing. I hated season 1. It almost got me to drop Discovery entirely. Still haven't watched the final third of that season, and I don't think I ever will. The writing has gotten a little bit better, but it still is full of cheap short-cuts and conceits. And the tendency to write out characters is getting old, fast. Airiam, Nhan, now Saru. Seriously. Maybe season 4 will finally get more episodic, Trek writers seem to be much more at home there. So I watch Discovery for the character moments: for that cute romantic banter between Book and Michael, for the family moments between Paul and Hugh and Adira and Gray. Paul finally getting to just call Adira his child almost had me tear up. (And definitely team Owosetmer. Or Detsekun?) As I said, I dearly love the characters. What I will definitely not watch is the section 31 spin-off, should it ever materialise. I hate how since the 90s Trek has been framing their proto-fascist Geheimpolizei as a necessary evil for the Federation's utopia. Georgiou committed unspeakable atrocities, but unlike with Ozyraa the series just shrugged them off. On the contrary, we even got that recent two-parter explaining her personal code of honour. I love Yeoh as an actress, but... no. Just no.

[SPOILERS for the episode in my comment] yeah, honestly i feel this was the best season finale Disco's had. flashy but with more substance and not head scratching things like the Enterprise suddenly having a bunch of zoom-zoom fighters zipping about. And yeah, in the moment i actually saw the sudden character development as a double fake out, that the writers knew they've got a nasty habit of writing off these side characters after they get any development (i must give a 1000 kudos to each of the actors playing the bridge crew. they're lucky if they get a single line or moment in an episode that isn't just reading off shield percentages, and each one makes those moments count, building interesting and intriguing characters that the audience WANTS to see more of. Also speak of, do you know where Nilson was and replaced with some other crew woman in the past two episodes. Sara Mitich was back as Nilson in the closing crew shot. Weird, i know the actress, Sara Mitiich played Airiam in season 1 before being replaced with Hannah Cheesman for season 2 . I am pleased that after last episode we got solid confirmation that Admirable Admiral Vance is a good guy. Oded Fehr has done a great job playing this character as someone who is pragmatic but holds to the ideals of the Federation, and unlike most higher up authority figures is smart (he figured out Osyraa was on Discovery on his own) as well as the right blend of being tough but not a tyrant. As for the turbolift chasm, as someone who grew up reading Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise and still has up on my walls those detailed angled cutaway posters of the Enterprises and Voyager they made in the '90s, those chasms irk me. but i've mellowed enough with age that i just mentally put them next to the 78-deck turbolift shaft Spock flies up in Star Trek V and repeat the MST3K mantra. i did like how they handled Adira and Gray and giving them a goal and arc to strive for next season. the 32rd century uniforms i sort of like. they remind me more of the Orville that Star Trek, and i'm not crazy about the gorget-esque piece on the collar. i agree that they don't meld well with the Disco interiors well, maybe there will be a refit of the interior between seasons to match the exterior?

This season as a whole was pretty good. I really wish they'd make the seasons longer though. It would give some of the story lines time to actually breathe. Ni'Var felt really rushed to me. Other than that, I'm definitely looking forward to season 4 and the possibility that they'll do more strictly episodic content.
