How Star Trek Failed Religious Inclusion - The Jessie Gender Holiday Special

It's finally time to put an end to the horrible year that was 2020. So  let's send it out in style with the Jessie Gender Holiday Special  starring Jessie Gender, Steve Shives, Ensign Cricket and over 30 special  guests, including some you may recognize from a certain famous scifi  franchise... But it wouldn't be a Jessie Gender video if we didn't talk  about representation, so let's celebrate the holidays and the new year  wit a discussion of how Star Trek has always viewed religion... with  apathy.

Haha, I try my best. I mostly just set up the camera and hoped he would show up where I needed him too haha. He was just played along well haha.

Part of me understands the difficult, sometimes rough relationship Trek has with religion. I grew up Catholic, and while our family never was what you'd call 'religious', faith was a part of me, for the first two decades of my life. But it also is a source of internalised shame that is difficult to explain... let's say it was home for a while, but only part of me was ever really welcome. To this day I can't set foot in a church. Leaving everything behind was difficult, and I still feel loss, but it was necessary. I was angry at the church, at the Vatican, even at my parents, for ever raising me with religion. I wanted no part of it anymore. I became that angry atheist ranting about religion being the root problem of humanity, for a while at least. No, I'm not proud of that time. A part of my problem with religion to this day is a lot of religious people seem to define their freedom by others not being allowed to do things, or to even exist. But of course that's a cliché, and also religion too can change. So I wonder... what if Trek and other sci-fi shows were to show us what religion could be, in an utopian world?
