Star Trek Discovery "The Sanctuary" Review | Season 2 Ep 8

Star Trek Discovery took a side step to visit Book's homeworld in the  latest episode. But does "The Sanctuary" hold up to the rest of Star  Trek Discovery's third season. Or does it get lost in the Burn? Found in  my review of Star Trek Discovery Season 3 Episode 8 "The Sanctuary".

I really hope Discovery's approach of " just pick one of the more popular suggestions for a third pronoun and run with it" might finally make a difference. Younger German trekkies growing up with it might actually achieve something years of activism could not. To quote a famous physician, "optimism, Captain!"

That's deeply facinating, and while deeply disappointing, it's honeslty been really interesting to hear different pronouns used in different languages for this episode

After an acquaintance mentioned it, I listened to the German dub, which I don't usually do, to see what pronoun they used. (Apparently they went with 'dey'.) The problem is, German is a strongly gendered language, just like e.g. French, and we currently have two personal pronouns for people and one neuter form ('es', cognate to 'it') that is usually only used for things, never a person. In fact calling a person 'it' feels positively insulting, even though AFAIK some nonbinary folks are okay with it. Long story short, we don't have something like singular they usage. There are literally dozens of suggestions for a third pronoun, but so far none has stuck. Maybe Discovery's repeated casual use of one of those suggestions throughout the series will finally mainstream it.

The scenes between Hugh, Paul and Adira were so, so adorable. It looks like maybe Adira has found a new family for themselves, and Paul certainly could not be more proud a dad. He's positively glowing with pride, and personally I really like the idea of Culber and Stamets becoming de facto parents.

Watching you talking about LGBTQ+ family reminds me how my friends started calling me Papa. ❤❤❤
