"Ready Player Two" Transphobia Controversy Explained!

No problem! The video will be there when you finish, but don't worry, it's not horrible to be reading the book <3

The funny thing is, I was born in the late 70s, so I grew up in the 80s. Like, literally. I grew up with Marty McFly, with Peter Venkman and Egon Spengler, with Kevin Flynn. I had a plastic He-Man toy and a glow-in-the-dark Prof. Simon, Grag and Otho as well as a Cosmosliner, while the Captain himself and the Comet were my brother's (Captain Future really was an 80s thing here in Germany, even though the anime is technically from 1978). I am just a few years younger than Ernest Cline. And yet I never understood Super 8, or Stranger Things for that matter. I never felt this yearning, never shared that feeling the 80s were when things were "still okay". Maybe it's because so much of that nostalgia is viewed through boys' eyes now, and though I was a very nerdy kid and didn't particularly like horses or Barbie dolls, I wasn't quite a boy, not even then. Maybe that's why Ready Player One mainly struck me as a piece of singularly badly written nostalgia by a man singularly desperate to relive his childhood. Oh well. I agree with your points about Cline probably not being an actual, 'active' transphobe, though. In times of JKR, TERFs and other bigots and a raging culture war that at times feels already lost, it almost feels like a thing to be praised. And that's so sad.

Oh no, I just started reading it 20 minutes ago. I think I'm gonna finish and then watch your video.
