My thought was something like the world is mega cities. Tokyo style gaming leagues are all the rage. The unknowns are an Alien race coming to fix the earth because humans are destroying it. The military is defeated and gamers rise up to fight via proxy with drones and militarized robots. The builders essentially create the world we know to determine whether or not the humans are worthy or not to recontrol their own planet or not. Idk... just quick thoughts.
