Firefly: Shindig [Ep 4] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Comments

Yeah, it's understandable. I just think he could go about it in a more constructive way by describing his issues and without the name-calling lol. But that's part of his character, too, that he'll surprise you with how petty and immature he can be while making all kinds of more mature and ethically-minded decisions elsewhere. I suspect that's what makes him interesting to her.

Dan

HAHA that's fair. I was still underage, but in my double digits when Firefly was released, though it certainly wouldn't have appealed to the version of me back then. I love that grounding was a threat to *not* watching something. 😅

Mal's view of it all is pretty realistic to me. Sometimes men will feel negatively about something if a woman they care about is directly involved/impacted.

kaiielle

Definitely a memorable set of lines.

kaiielle

I'm glad they did too.

kaiielle

Yes, I really appreciated the world building going on here. Getting to glimpse how the wealthy live was exciting. Aren't all wealthy gatherings simply for appearances? 😜 Great fact! Her dress was GORG.

kaiielle

She's fantastic. She's that sweet mix of endearing and awkward that I just love in a person.

I need to save most of my thoughts about this show because I know you don't want spoilers or even influences in advance. But now that you've seen this episode, it won't spoil anything to say that this is one of my three favorite episodes. You mentioned at the end that this show wasn't old. You're right that it's a matter of perspective though. I wasn't even born when this show aired. So, personally, I consider this show old! I have a lot of weird memories of first watching this show. I actually saw the movie, "Serenity," first. It just looked sci-fi-ish from the cover when I pulled it out of my dad's DVD collection. I had no idea there was a show attached to it. My dad caught me watching the movie at the very end, and I thought his head was going to explode while he tried to explain there was a whole show beforehand that I should have watched. He threatened to ground me if I didn't watch the show immediately. As for this episode... "Mercy is the mark of a great man." Me: "Mercy sucks! Stab him!" Mal stabs him. "Guess I'm just a good man." Me: "Stab him harder!" Mal stabs him again. "Well, I'm all right..." My Dad, while I'm laughing: "I think we need to get you to your therapist more often..."

This is one of my favorite episodes of the show, especially the dialog between Mal and Inara. Lots of little gems in the writing. Speaking on his smuggling: "What I do may be illegal, but at least it's honest." Speaking on Inara directly: "I might not show respect to your job, but he didn't respect you -- that's the difference." I don't appreciate how he treats her, either (sw is real work, and her profession extends well beyond that anyway, as she shows with her weapons training), but you can tell his animosity towards her profession is because of how much he cares for her. There was a reunion special years ago that's hard to find online now... Joss Whedon was absent but another writer was present, recalling conversations with Joss and where Joss wanted to take their relationship, and how excited he was about it. I can't say more until you've finished the movie. But wow.

"Mercy is the mark of a great man" *stab* "Guess I'm just a good man" *stab* "... Eh, I'm alright..." Love that auto-downgrading sequence ^_^ Incidentally, the actress who plays Kaylee actually doesn't like strawberries, but her character apparently really does lol

Dan

Kaylee is such a good and decent person. I'm glad that older man came to her defense. The gossip trio have no idea what a prize they're missing out on.

Returning to Persephone gives us the opportunity for some more world-building this episode - we'd already seen that Persephone had a blend of posh, rich areas and much poorer areas in Serenity (from where Inara's client was that episode, and the docks respectively), but this gives us a better view of what the richer part of the planet is like. In universe, Persephone is located at the edge of the central planets - essentially making it a bridge between them and the poorer border planets, hence the mix of wealth and poverty. As a companion, Inara essentially has the highest 'social rank' on the crew - this rich side of Persephone, with lordships etc. is the sort of place where a companion (theoretically) 'belongs'. Simon's upbringing and profession as a doctor makes him the only one of the crew who comes close to Inara's level of standing within the 'verse (were he not a fugitive of course). Kaylee's great this episode. IMO, the reason she was so popular at the 'shindig' is that unlike most of the people there, she's 'real' - not putting up a front like virtually everything else. As Mal said, it feels like there is something of a lie about the whole event - it's all about appearances rather than substance. Little fact about Inara's dress - it was partially made from the costume designer's own wedding dress, reusing the corset but reversed to change the style a little.

"Mighty fine shindig!" This episode is just fun. Also, Kaylee mesmerizing the entire male population of the ball by just being herself is straight up spectacular.
