Yes, def likable to me. Not the mainstream likable.

I definitely agree that you should follow this up with Ford v Ferrari. Ultimately, I do think that rudeness is largely 1) about perception and 2) about intent, so in the long run, after gaining a clear perception of how Niki actually is through understanding his intent, I do find him "likable" in a non-traditional sense, and Bruhl is great as him.

Yes, I enjoy when sports are displayed as something sort of appealing to the average person. I think racing can be so appealing because driving is something that is so normal and every day and racing is just the more extreme version of that task.

Thank you for all of this information! I like that Nicki was involved in the filming a bit and was pleased with how the movie turned out. I saw that he passed a few years ago.

Rush is a great film that really makes you look at the world of racing like it's something worth doing. I appreciate a good sports story with character driven arcs, but when it comes to football or basketball and even soccer, I generally come away from the movie still thinking it's absolutely ridiculous to risk breaking your own body or someone else's body for a ring and a pig skin. Racing however demands attention, perseverance, stamina, and embracing the unknown. It requires conviction and is even spiritual on some level. It's like racing Death itself. I love the convictions both drivers had and their rivalry. The hospital scenes, OMG, Bruhl was remarkable selling that pain and discomfort. Both Hemsworth and Bruhl acted the hell out of these roles. If you loved Rush, I would say absolutely yes watch Ford v Ferrari. It's even better than this one IMO.

Formula 1 is basically the only sport I follow - I've been a fan for something like 35 of my 40 years. Since the '76 season was before I was born, I can't say with certainty, but my understanding is that the film is broadly accurate - there are some minor changes to tell a better story, but nothing outrageous. It certainly gives a decent 'feel' of what F1 was like in the 70s, when safety, whilst considered, wasn't a primary concern. There were gradual improvements to safety during the 70s and 80s, but F1 only really got serious about track, car and driver safety following the deaths of Roland Ratzenburger and Aryton Senna in 1994. The superfast pit-stops F1 is known for didn't really become a thing until the late 80s/early 90s when refuelling was banned - they then slowed to around ~10s when refuelling was reintroduced in the mid 90s, then when refuelling was banned again in the 2010 dropped to the 3s mark. The current F1 pit-stop record is 1.80s, set by McLaren in 2023. Nicki Lauda was involved to an extent with the making of Rush, and was happy with the final result. Daniel Bruhl met Nicki prior to filming - one anecdote that he shared during promotion of the film is that when flying to meet Nicki for the first time, Nicki told him to only bring hand luggage, so that if they didn't get along he could fly straight back! Another F1 film worth watching is the Senna documentary from 2010. There is an upcoming film in production titled F1 that is being made with Lewis Hamilton advising and with the full support of F1 - it's currently delayed so I'm not sure when it's going to be released, but will incorporate real footage shot during a few of the Grand Prix from the last couple of seasons, and the actual current F1 drivers alongside the cast. Ford vs. Ferrari is another good motor racing film, but concentrated on Le Mans (it's also known as Le Mans '66 in other countries)
