Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

All great questions!

kaiielle

Totally fair that this wasn't quite for you. The runtime certainly doesn't help with that either.

kaiielle

Agreed to all of this!

kaiielle

Knowing that Jamie won over Angela, I agree with you all. Angela was definitely more deserving of it.

kaiielle

Tenoch Huerta is great in Narcos: Mexico, would definitely recommend giving that a watch at some point! Yes, Shuri's arc was fantastic. It gave me Phase 1-3 vibes.

kaiielle

Agreed.

big agree on Jamie Lee Curtis and Angela Bassett. Jamie got the popular points for a role that was not Oscar worthy at all. Angela deserved it so much more she killed it. Absolute, pun not intended, Queen

Couple observations, Queen Ramonda wanted to tell Shuri about T'Calla son in the woods during the ritual. Will be interesting to see Prince T'calla grow and how and if he claims his path to the throne, especially if M'Baku remains on the throne. What's next for Okoye and the Midnight Angels? Will the US continue with their plans to de-stablize and conquer Wakanda? How will the discovery of Adamantium effect the search for Vibranium?

People probably wont like this but in general I was bored in many parts of this movie, yes over all it was good but, they just rehashed the revenge cycle of making a new black panther. I understand that's how it had to be but still overall boring to the story of a new panther. Best part of the movie was Namor, and learning of his people and his past, and how they became. Ofcorse the tribute to Chadwick Boseman was well done. Yes Namor was probably going to attack reguardless but the fact that Nakia flat out killed one of Namors people is part of the reason it was much worse than it needed to be. Overall it was enjoyable but like I said some of it was boring imo

I agree wholeheartedly.

I have to agree on the point about Angela Bassett to an extent. If Stephanie Hsu had won, I'd have been fine with the decision, but feel Jamie Lee Curtis' win was more of a "how have you not won yet" award rather than for the performance in question.

When an antagonist has a clear and understandable motivation they become so much more than the standard "villain of the week" that is often seen in superhero movies. It was much the same in Shang-Chi with Wenwu and for that matter Killmonger from Black Panther. Having Shuri almost step down that dark path herself was a great choice, but I'm glad she was able to pull back from it. There were so many standout performances in this movie. Sure, Letitia Wright and Angela Basset stand out as they should, but to me both Lupita Nyong'o and Danai Gurira were also incredible.

I was a little less pessimistic about Namor’s motivations for agreeing to an alliance. Sounded like he was just spitting facts. In the beginning of the movie, the French made a move and then, when Ross was talking to the Director of the CIA, she talked about the USA going to war with Wakanda and seizing vibranium. So I believe the Wakandans will definitely call upon Namor and his people for help. Angela Bassett stole this one for me, and she was robbed of the Oscar win. They gave it to Jamie Lee Curtis and she wasn’t even the best supporting actress in the movie she won for (Everything Everywhere All At Once) IMHO. Great reaction!

I'm glad you enjoyed Namor. He is by far one of my fav anti-hero characters in the comics. It was also awesome seeing the Aztec/Mayan culture represented in the MCU and Tenoch Huerta did an incredible job, he was easily my favorite actor in the movie (outside of Angela Bassett) and I'd never seen him prior to WF. Origin story wise they changed a lot of that up with Namor (I was completely fine with since I liked the way they reworked it) but characterization-wise, they got that almost on point (ruthless, cares deeply about his nation). In terms of Riri Williams, a lot of people didn't like her introduction to the MCU and felt like she didn't need to be in the movie (like if the CIA or the government got their hands on the vibranium machine, you'd think they'd look into how to make more and have blueprints about that so there wasn't really any use to go after the scientist that built the machine. Imo a better way would have been to build her character up from the ground (like her motivations and all that). Riri is getting her own Disney+ show so an introduction there to start would have been better instead of her just having an Iron Man suit right away. Shuri did have one of the best in-movie arcs I've seen from the MCU in some time honestly. Her journey with grief and anger was really well done and it mirrors T'Challa's journey in Captain America: Civil War.

I actually like the story in Wakanda Forever better than the first Black Panther movie. The main difference is of course Chadwick made the first one a classic. He’s irreplaceable and so is his Black Panther character.

Sorry for the Harrison Ford spoiler. Forgot you don't know that yet.😐.

Thanks for spoiling that Harrison Ford is in something coming up. 🥴 I don't see the dishonor personally, quite the opposite. I'm pleased that they went with the son route, so they can still have a T'Challa in the future. Father/son, instead of the same character just recast.

kaiielle

Marvel had a tough decision to make with this movie. Recasting Black Panther could have a large backlash from the fans but killing off such a iconic character also would not be received well. They chose the latter. I understand that it was a tough choice but losing such a iconic character that the actor loved just because the actor passed away seems to dishonor his memory. The character was not his even though he embodied the role perfectly. His family have gone on record saying they were ok with him being recasted but the people at Marvel made it clear that was not happening. William hurt who plays General Ross in Hulk movie and Civil war also passed away and was recasted with Harrison Ford. He wasn't an iconic character who needed to be kept alive for the story but Marvel did it so why is the Black icon killed off when his family didnt want it and he most likely would not want it. There are always an agenda with these higher ups in the business and black panther meant lot to black community and many others. With all that said I did like this movie and Shuri is great as his successor. Her mother and the actress killed it and we lost her too.
