Dark: Endings and Beginnings [2x08] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

The showrunners really know how to make good season finales for this show. I can't decide if I like this finale or the Season 1 finale more. I think this one, just because of the huge impact we have carrying us into Season 3, which I am so crazy excited about! [Direct link here.]

As always, looking forward to your comments, thoughts, and theories! Things are about to get wild.

Cheers,

Right? I forget what they won, some young actors award, but they're so stinking cute!

nouvelle_vague

They're so YOUNG!

I was impressed by how quickly you realized Magnus and Franciszka's relationship. That took much longer to occur to me. Not sure if this will work, but in honour of Martha and Jonas and the end of season 2: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Et8mZMlXIAIoGOl.jpg

Okay this really contradicts earlier comments you've made. Since you've seen the series before, please read my DM and refrain from theorizing with those of us who have truly watched for the first time. Thank you!

kaiielle

I am confused. You have seen this show before, yes?

Ohh I'll have to go back and rewatch that. Probably should go back through these two seasons this weekend before season 3 anyway

We have seen the airplanes before in the future. Once Jonas and that girl hid from them flying over. But yea Winden is probably quarantined off like Chernobyl.

Charlotte->Elizabeth ->Charlotte reveal. Your eyeballs and your brain didn't put it together because it logically doesn't make sense except for the fact that the show has been priming us with this since the beginning. First it was a letter, then a book, then a machine, then Jonas and Mikkel and now Charlotte and Elizabeth. Without the existence of the future then the past wouldn't exist. When I first saw it I knew it was Elizabeth and Noah but my brain kept thinking that Noah lied to Charlotte when he showed her the photo. It wasn't until Adam said it that made me pause the episode and watch it from the beginning again.

I grew up in a religious household and was put through a private Baptist school so I have a lot of that stuff rattling around in my head. Probably why I'm so anti-religious establishment now because I've seen what it really is on the inside and it's grosser than the people they spend their days condemning.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Appreciate the religious stuff btw, I'm so detached from that.

If the alt world is a mirror of the one we've been in, then I can presume there is time travel there too. It may get messy! 😂

kaiielle

I didn't! That potentially throws a hurdle into my one theory that The Stranger/Adam have no memory of teenage Jonas being whisked away by Alt-Martha. The Stranger did say he'd already seen Martha die once before. Looking forward to how this all connects and is explained.

Okay so just writing as I'm watching - There was an airplane noise, so I'm guessing that means this nuclear event was more Chernobyl meltdown level than worldwide war, which I should have deduced from the number of times the plant was shown already in the show. Okay so still trying to look at this from the religious perspective, the Agnes shooting Noah moment could be a flipped reference of Jesus' arrest in the garden. Judas brought the centurions to Jesus in an act of betrayal. Simon Peter cut off a centurion's ear to which Jesus rebuked Peter and healed the centurion. And since Adam said they're the antithesis of religion, the flipped version being Adam as Evil Jesus consents to the centurion and/or Judas' murder. Noah stated Adam was waging war on humankind, not God, which seems to be a reference to Lucifer. He was cast out of heaven after failing to kill God so he decided to spend his time on earth taking as many humans down with him as possible since God loved his creation so much. Certainly fits with Adam being a Lucifer figure being an antithesis. Antithesis = AntiChrist perhaps. I'm beginning to think that the religious aspect is less of a storytelling direction and more of a mirror to humankind's belief system and how people twist words to support their agendas. Man, I was so upset about Martha's death and then alt-Martha shows up. Dark totally pulled a Futurama lol Elisabeth is her own grandma So now I'm curious about the sphere engulfing the nuclear plant. It expanded but we didn't see how much. You can hear a plane in the opening scene so there has to be some world left somewhere. And does the alt-world have time machnes too or do they instead have the Golden Snitch Reality Hopper but no time travel? OR they do have time machines and found a way to invent the Reality Hoppers in order to save the ones they love from the apocalypse and leave Adam to his "new world" which becomes his own personal hell? I mean the show is called Dark, it could very well end with the villain winning and both worlds dying. But that just seems like all of this would have been for nothing if that happened. That's...dark. Looking forward to season 3, despite the fct my brain turns to goo after every episode LOL

I love this episode. The Elizabeth/Charlotte situation is such a mindfuck. Both are simultaneously their own mother and daughter hahaha. Also, did you catch the spot where Martha died? Stranger Jonas kept staring at that spot throughout this season, including in this episode.
