The Inner Circle Podcast - Episode 5

Did anyone ask Dan if he needed help while filming on the beach in a hospital gown?

Yes.

It was really interesting to hear your process behind the controversy video, I think the production shift was very effective. Even though the video is intrinsically more formal, I think it retained the spontaneity of the other videos—with the performance, but also, I don’t think most people realize how technical a video like that is (with lighting, a video village monitor, etc). So, it initially has the facade of being a simple/down-to-earth/humble/vulnerable message while in actuality being meticulously planned, which obviously speaks to how apology videos are often just carefully calculated (and inauthentic) attempts at people salvaging their “brand.”

dan you are most fascinating. as somebody who swam at the beach today i affirm personally getting the water in all the holes in my face feels awful everytime. your outlook on it as “exfoliating” and like a neti pot is incredible and i’ll have to take a page from your book. even though neti pot doesn’t feel that pleasant either tbh. cheers to you daniel!!!

anyone that hates on you or your videos is STUPID!!! they just don't have the mental capacity to understand your artistic vision and i pity them. in all honesty i get so excited whenever you post a new video, tweet, podcast episode, etc. because i think you bring a much needed authentic voice to the space of comedy on the internet. i think the reason so many people, including me, have been fascinated by these recent videos out in public because it's something most people could never do. people know that it takes an incredible amount of strength to let yourself be that vulnerable, even within the context of doing it to make a funny video (and this also applies to videos where you’re just sitting in your car telling a story). anyway, i'm looking forward to seeing what you're up to next. 1000% keep it up!

Thank you so much Ethan! I appreciate that. It is nice to hear since the personal connection can sometimes be lost when it is just numbers on a screen. The car videos won't be going away by any means. I don't want to make it sound like, I'm scrapping everything and starting over-- It is all part of a continuous process of evolving that has never stopped!

I'll be honest Dan, I really appreciate your car videos. I don't see them as "car" videos, but the creative stories and funny moments that happen within them. Every artist has a niche, and I think being able to work around certain familiar elements while bringing in new elements is what keeps things exciting. You might not want to be known as the crazy car vlog guy though, so I understand. But all the little things like stream of consciousness casual storytelling, being hot in the car, getting annoyed at pedestrians, and the lo-fi vibes etc, all makes them so unique and interesting, even if you think that continuing them might just be a re-tread of a previous video but worse. I was honestly looking forward to possibly more videos like some of your older ones, like playing characters such as the priest, drug guy, therapist, and new wacky story/drama arcs, and so on! I feel like there is so much potential in that, but I know everyone approaches creativity differently and like you said you want to take big swings, I would just say don't be too hard on yourself and feel like you constantly have to be making something new! But regardless of what the future holds, I am excited. You are a talented and creative person and I do look forward to what you make next.
