[STATUS] - June 2017 (Update June 30th, 10:30pm AEST)

(Update June 30th, 10:30pm AEST)

Its a good thing there's so much division required to build this mechanism, because I absolutely LOVE using this dividing plate (SHORT VIDEO). So fast, and easy to use. Not just the wheels to divide, but also the calendar ring markings, calendar location holes, as well as angular placement of some of the other features.

   ------------------------------------------------

(Update June 29th, 8:00am AEST)

The red light is on - recording the narration for the 1st of 2 AM Fragment videos today.

   ------------------------------------------------

(Update June 26th, 10:00am AEST)

The unmistakable spark pattern of high carbon steel. Shooting continues today.

   ------------------------------------------------

(Update June 23rd, 10:30pm AEST)

Have spent the evening cutting teeth, oh so many teeth... Shooting continues tomorrow.

  ------------------------------------------------

(Update June 22nd, 8:40pm AEST)

Stripping more blanks tonight, shooting of both videos continues.

  ------------------------------------------------

(Update June 18th, 9:30am AEST)

A shot from last nights furnace work - 4 time based tests, and X marks the control. As usual, I've ended up recording too much material for one reasonable length video, so this morning I've decided to split it into 2 separate videos. Shooting for an end of month release for both.

 ------------------------------------------------

(Update June 16th, 6:00pm AEST)

I made these two Iron Age style chisels today - simple, yet highly effective. Color tempered so that the cutting edge has the barest hint of the pale straw oxide color - I want these two as hard as possible, just short of chipping under load.

 ------------------------------------------------

(Update June 15th, 5:30am AEST)

I have spent the last few days continuing shooting for the next Fragments video (an Ancient Tool Tech video). I also need to make quite a few tools to complete the final task - Yesterday I made this tool that operates a lot like a classic clockmakers "Swing Tool". Oak frame on an oak base, fastened with dowel pins. Don't mind the rough finish, I've left it rustic looking to fit the period! Toolmaking and Shooting continues today.

  ------------------------------------------------

(Update June 9th, 8:15am AEST)

It took a bit longer than I expected to nail down a few of the details, but that "ancient process" I mentioned below is sorted. A real eye opener for me personally, and I hope it will be for you too. Video shoot starts today.

  ------------------------------------------------

(Update June 6th, 11am AEST)

Using trial and error to learn how best to perform a truly ancient process for the next Antikythera Fragment video. Pure alchemy. If I can get it to work, it will be a very worthwhile video.

  ------------------------------------------------

(Update June 4th, 2017 5:30pm AEST)

Shooting more footage for the Fire Piston video this evening. Lots of interesting textures and shapes to work with, it will be a fun video I think. More shooting tomorrow, weather permitting for the fire shots.

 ------------------------------------------------

(Update June 3rd, 2017 8:30am AEST)

Making a trailer version of BSC EP 4 for the website, doing subtitles and generally cleaning up the PC system in preparation for starting the next video. So I'm online for the next hour if you've got any Q's

------------------------------------------------

(Update June 2nd, 2017 11.10 PM AEST)

Now uploading... Australian internet connections are evidently powered by carrier pigeon, so expect approx 6 hrs for the upload to complete.  Will check and release first thing in the morning :)

(Update June 2nd, 2017 PM AEST)

Dialogue recording is complete, now exporting the video file - current indication is 5 hrs to completion. Time for some dinner...

(June 2nd, 2017 AM)

Recording dialogue for Episode 4 of the Byzantine Sundial-Calendar today, all going well with the subsequent produce, it will be uploaded this evening.

Cheers,

Chris.

Hey Nikos, yes the main problem is that the post timeline will get very crowded, which might be a bit annoying for those not interested in the updates. There also doesn't seem to be any way to turn off email notifications with each post, so it would get a bit spammy for everyones inbox too - I figure this is a good compromise :)

Clickspring

Chris a suggestion. I would very much like to see the status update posts as separate posts vs additions to existing post. I don't get any notifications if you edit a post so I missed quite a few of the updates. Not sure what other patrons think. Yes you will end up with more status posts than videos in the patron feed but it's a tradeoff. Thoughts?

Terrific to have you watching mate :) Its on the to-do list, but I never seem to get to it because the project videos get priority - the only real piece of advice I can give is use PLENTY of light.

Clickspring

Yes, agreed - I'd love to film everything, but its just so time consuming. I can do one or the other (prototype/final), but I'd be hard pressed to do both and keep the video flow going. As it happens the process I mentioned above is a go - very excited about this one, I will start shooting it today.

Clickspring

Loving the videos as always, especially the diligence of your research with the Antikythera mechanism. I'm wondering if we could get some more insight into your video production process. I'm planning some instructional videos for my lab, and the clean, professional style of your videos is absolutely top-notch.

In Re: Jun 6 - " If I can get it to work, it will be a very worthwhile video." While you may have better things to do, I'm sure that even if you can't get it to work, we'd enjoy hearing about it. Much science fails to do anything, but as long as the work itself was done well, important lessons are learned.

Dilapidus

This is a status update that I mentioned in a previous post - essentially a single monthly post (regularly updated) where you can get a day to day update on my activities in between video releases. Simply ignore the posts with the [STATUS] tag if such updates are of no interest to you . I see a screen shot of a monitor but no content. No links to content.

Paul Devey

How do you mean Paul?

Clickspring

is there supposed to be something here?

Paul Devey

ha ha! Fair enough! Take it as given that I'm talking about my own time zone, AEST.

Clickspring

Uh so I love these updates and all but when exactly is this evening? Like, Australia is really far away my dude and It would take quite a bit of googling just to get the time. Could you post it in the future with a timezone included? thx chief

Stephen Boyd

Yes Blue Yeti :)

Clickspring

Is that a Blue Yeti?

Paul Reeber

Ha ha! Hopefully not rotten tomatoes!

Clickspring

...can't...wait...

Subsequent produce? You mean like lettuce or something?

This is the best news I have had all day, I can't wait!!!!

I'm another Aussie with overseas friends. I often say that the world cannot end today because it is already tomorrow in Australia! :)

Jeff Armstrong

Ha ha!

Clickspring

Same here Chris, mine its on its way also. A Clickspring episode also on its way! Win!

I can already hear: "g'day Chris here and welcome back to clickspring" :)

Gabriele Bonetti

Cool, cannot wait!! Additionally, I get the novelty of knowing that you posted this on the 2nd June and I'm reading it on the 1st (UK Greenwich BST) :-D More of that time travel stuff with This Old Tony no doubt.

A clickspring release day is a good day in my book. Also can't wait to get the fire piston. It's shipped and on its way. I'm taking it to the Oklahoma woodworking event later this month!

A Glimpse Inside

Its definitely better than it was 6 mths ago - it really struggled with my accent!

Clickspring

I think that YT translator is far better than Facebooks

Ralph McCoy

Hey Anton, Yes I manually insert the subtitles after uploading to YT. The auto translated subtitles have too many errors to be acceptable (although it has improved a lot over the last few months)

Clickspring

Hey there, looking forward to the next episode :) One short question though, do you embed the subtitles in your videos directly? Asking because youtube shows it as "Englisch" without the "automatically translated "

Thank you Nils!

Clickspring

This is exactly how I picture the procedure of your voiceovers 😁 Soothing is an understatement. Keep up the amazing work Chris!
