Hey Folks,

I'm very pleased to announce that the Clickspring Fire Piston  is now available for purchase, at a retail price of $89.00 USD plus shipping. As a Patron you get the first opportunity to purchase, and as a thank you for your support I am offering all Patrons $10 off at checkout using the code "CLICKSPRINGPATRON".

Buy Now:  https://clickspring.myshopify.com/products/the-clickspring-fire-piston

Available stock will initially be limited to 20, so that I can confirm that all is as it should be for the e-commerce and shipping side of things. Once that all checks out over the next few days/weeks, it's open season on the first production run of 350.

I mentioned in the status post below that I'm in the process of shooting an accompanying instructional video, so that's not yet complete. However the beta testers used a written instruction sheet to get their first ignition, and appear to have had few issues. So for now that's the source of user info until I finish the video. You can download those instructions here.

If you should encounter any problems during the order or fulfillment process,  please let me know immediately, and I'll get right onto solving it for you.

Cheers,

Chris.

PS This is a collaborative effort between myself and John Saunders from NYCCNC/Saunders Machine Works. John has been an incredible source of production engineering knowledge, and experience. Helping me avoid some of the traps and pitfalls that often affect a project like this. If you're interested in doing something like this for yourself, then I cannot recommend John highly enough as a source of information and hard won experience. If you're interested in knowing more about the process of how the production run was implemented, then please feel free to ask any questions in the comments or via message/email.

Here is a video of me making the prototype: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvCB3_KtSz0" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvCB3_KtSz0</a>

Could you do a video showing us how you make the fire piston?

Keaton

Awesome Paul!

Clickspring

Mine arrived today, very skookum :) Will take some time over the weekend to get the hang of it!

Paul Warren

Excellent!

Clickspring

Got mine in today, took it out back to the fire pit, took a few tries but once the char cloth started it was off to the races.

Bpendragon

So pleased it arrived safe and sound David! Look forward to hearing how it performed :)

Clickspring

Hi Chris! I just received my beautiful fire piston today. Great timing; I'm heading out in the woods this weekend, so I'll give it a run! I'm really excited to have a piece of your work. Thanks for putting up such great content for us to enjoy!

David Olson

Hey David, nothing really changed that much - The black anodize and laser engraving of the logo are obvious changes, but are essentially cosmetic. I extended the stroke by a 1/2 inch to improve the compression ratio, but other than that its exactly as per the prototype.

Clickspring

I think there would be an interesting video in discussing what needed to change between the hand-built version and the production version.

David Lang

Awesome David, thank you!

Clickspring

Just ordered one .

By far the biggest thing I learned was the value of having meticulous, bullet proof drawings, with all aspects of the product clearly specified. It sounds obvious, but its monumentally important.

Clickspring

Awesome, now I have to think whether I want to make one first or get one first and then make one to give to somebody! Can you make a video about going from the prototype that you had to production? Essentially, the things that you learned were important in this collaboration with John Saunders.

Ivan Tarasov

Hey Ryan, it weighs 158 grams

Clickspring

What does the fire piston weigh? The one thing I've been thinking continuously is that an aluminum/brass device would be far too heavy to realistically take hiking/backpacking.

Ryan Das

Excellent user information has been flowing in from the Beta Testers, all of which will make its way into the script for the user video, and the written instructions. In the meantime though, I wanted to share this particularly good info from Patron Mike Davey: • Don't push the char cloth too deep in the cone. I find it works best a bit loose in there and with some of it sitting up out of the top a bit. • For me it works best on a sturdy table/bench about hip high. With the base of the piston on the bench a bit to my dominate side. Then I can push straight down using elbow and shoulder. I'm a little older, so don't have the speed of the younger ones that tried it, so sometime I used two hands, with the second hand mostly as a guide. This helped me feel more confident and thus allowed a more swift push. • Keeping the piston and cylinder clean does seem to help. • Don't get oil on the char cloth. At least that seems to me to be an issue. Clean hands, at least not oily. • Be sure the cone isn't wet with or filled with oil. • If you don't get it to work after a few times, grab a new piece of char cloth. If I didn't get it going after about three tries, I don't think I ever did. But, a new piece of cloth often started on the first try. • I found a little bit heavier oil sometimes worked better. May just have been my imagination though. • And finally if it isn't working, sit back, relax, and just enjoy the way it looks and feels in your hand. It really is a lovely item to have and hold. Also, it's much more useful than a fidget spinner. Once you chill a bit, give it a try again.

NYCCNC is also a friend of Jimmy Diresta :) I love it when YT brings creators together!

Dustin

Yes, although I already have something similar in the supporter swag packs that seems to have been received well: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGeYmt6VhFM" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGeYmt6VhFM</a>

Clickspring

Yes I really like it too :)

The rest of the stock is now available Florian :)

The rest of the stock is now available David :)

Clickspring

Well, I'm to late. Looking forward to the next batch.

All sold out while I slept, can't wait for the full run.

Bpendragon

Chris, one thing to consider: how about a keyring with the C of clickspring engraved. Something in the lines of the impossible puzzle video i.e. two different metals together to have the main body and the C for clickspring on it. Would that be something you could do?

I keep on refreshing the shopify page... still sold out.... (press F5 again....)

Dang it. Missed it. I will have to wait for the next batch. Chris, I am also using shopify for my wife's store. The checkout process is excellent and fast. Good choice on that :)

Ha ha! Terrific mate :)

Clickspring

Thanks Chris!! I'd write a longer comment but we've got orders to fill! :)

John Saunders (NYC CNC)

Thanks Alex, yes shipping to our corner of the world from the US is not pretty. If you want a real fright, check out the FedEx International Priority...

Clickspring

used paypal, pretty seamless, the shipping was on the high side though., looking forward to making some of these myself once I get my lathe in a few months

Alex Walton

Of course!

A Glimpse Inside

Terrific mate, I appreciate you jumping in early, thank you :)

Clickspring

Woke up. Saw this. Ordered it right away!! Thank you Chris!!

A Glimpse Inside

Quite possibly, its been an absolute blast working with John :)

Clickspring

This is awesome! I wish I could buy one. Will there be collaboration videos between yourself and John?

Aidan Jeffes

There is no good reason to deny yourself Rick :)

Clickspring

I have no legitimate use for this. But a colab between Clickspring and NYCCNC is fantastic. I might just need to get me one!

My name is Rick

They're a great little grown ups toy I think, perfect for playing with the kids too.

Clickspring

Terrific Paul! No they're shipping from the US :)

Clickspring

Yay I got in early enough to order one! Is it going to go from you, to the US, then back to me in Canberra?

Paul Warren

Hi Chris, thanks again for the original plans. I made two for gifts which were very well received. Although they haven't been used in anger, they get used regularly by both family members to show their mates. I made this short video <a href="https://youtu.be/1ughHRE6aBQ" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/1ughHRE6aBQ</a> (thanks for the comment btw) as I figured my brother wouldn't know what it was.

Awesome! How did the checkout procedure go?

Clickspring

Thats ok mate, I very much appreciate your support as it is :)

Clickspring

If I had the money I would order

Ordered :)
