[Full Video] - Making The Legs And Base

A new record for video length folks at 18 minutes, and without doubt the most satisfying one to produce so far. It covers a fairly wide range of shop activity, so I do hope you enjoy it :)

Erratum from the previous video: In discussion with my burl supplier for the scientific name of the wood, it turns out that the clock base is in fact a slice of the much rarer Red Morrel, rather than Red Mallee. They are both from the Eucalypt genus, with somewhat similar burl characteristics, even though the Morrel grows as a genuine upright tree as opposed to the low scrub Mallee. The Morrel is apparently much richer in color and texture, and you can see the yellow highlights (of what I assume is sapwood) in the piece that I have used. I wouldn't normally correct a video after publishing, but with 2 videos going out at the same time giving contradictory information, I'd prefer to avoid the email meltdown. So you can expect to see the Spare Parts #14 icon and video reflect the change from Mallee to Morrel before general release next week.

Wow! Your an artist, beautiful work. Thank you for the videos.

Terrific Michael, look forward to seeing more!

Not entirely sure how to share a picture, so I'm giving this a shot, let me know if you can see it. I'd love to try to record what I'm doing, I'm sure I could never come close to the quality of your videos though, but I'm sure it would be fun. https://www.patreon.com/posts/6114208

Yes its getting exciting to be so close to the finish line! Cheers Joe :)

Terrific Michael, be sure to post some pics when you get a chance :)

I love to see your videos, always makes me want to get back to my clock build, still early on, and a little out of order but am working on the plates for the John Wilding Castle clock. Have them all cut out and have started filing.

Michael G

I can only imagine your excitement the first time you tipped the whole thing upright! Lovely work, as always.

Joe Fisher

Cheers Aaron!

Clickspring

Ha ha! Wouldn't that be something!

Clickspring

Its just beautiful....... like looking into your new borns eyes for the first time!

Aaron Caviness

When you are done with the clock of all clocks, are you going to do a global tour with it?

Samuel Irons

Of course you did :) It's probably really pretty as well. Thanks!

Nils Rohwer

Hey Nils, terrific to hear that! I made a little mechanism to move the camera in an arc

Clickspring

Hi Chris! This is just fantastic, another great and inspirational video, I'm going to go make something now. I wanted to ask, how do you get your beautiful panning shots around your piece at the end?

Nils Rohwer

Thank you mate!

Clickspring

I really like how the feet and the base turned out. Beautiful!

Finn-Malte Drees

I was more than a bit nervous about that one Tom!! I faffed about for days looking at it, checking, rechecking, walk away, have a cup of tea, come back check again... There was going to be no going back after that cut and I really didn't want to mess it up!!

Clickspring

Hey Chris, how many times did you have to stop and think before you cut into those frames??? Must have been a tough one. Great episode as always. Gives me a real appreciation for what form tools can to in brass, even on modestly sized machines.

Tom Colson

Thanks for the heads up on Fusion, I'm going to check that out now.

Matthew Prince

ha ha Terrific!

Yes SW, although consider Fusion360 - same parametric functionality and free for home users

Looks like SolidWorks. One of the most powerful and user friendly CAD programs out there.

Andy Scott

My wife always hears the audio and says "oh you're watching aussie's world again?" I love it.

Steven Bierlink

I know you've probably been asked this like 200,000,000 times but What program are you using to plot all of this out? Do you design the part in CG first or the other way around? This was a great video though, and I'm really enjoying the longer videos.

Matthew Prince

Cheers Eric :)

Mostly by missing out on sleep! This latest one was very difficult to upload due to Telstra failures in my area. They can't bring that NBN online quick enough for me :)

Clickspring

You should see me carry the thing into its little storage space - you've never seen a grown man so paranoid of dropping something in your life!!

Clickspring

Thanks Brandon, I'm really pleased you liked that shot!

Clickspring

Terrific to hear that mate :)

I'd like to do a video series like that one day, but I suspect project videos will always push their way to the top. MrPete's videos are excellent for getting started. Wow, outstanding job Chris!

Hey Nelson, to some extent lacquer can be used to slow oxidation, but it wont halt it entirely. The only real protection is to electroplate the surfaces with a non reactive metal like gold. In reality though, 99% of the worlds clocks are left to develop a natural patina. I will polish and lacquer the frames, legs, pillars and a few other bits, but much like getting old, its better to simply accept the natural oxidation process, and enjoy the extra character it brings over time :)

Clickspring

Chris, I can not help but see some of the tarnished finish on the brass. Is there something that you will do to seal the finish under? You have worked so hard to make it look so good and see it just makes me wonder. Looking good as usual.

Nelson Collar

Once again a superb video. I only wish we were having one a week instead of having to wait. At first I was put off by the feet but came to see that they add a very nice touch to the whole clock. BTW, have you ever done anything on setting up your lathe and mill before using? As a prospective metal worker it would be great to see what some of the things a beginner should do to avoid problems.

Scott Clausen

I must say one of your better. Very nice machining and that wood working expertise was top shelf. Love the brass feet which added another rich look. You are going to work real hard to top that. Top of the day to you.

Once again Chris I am at a loss for superlatives! All I can say now, is you Really honored the Morrel, the wood screws are artwork, setups ingenious, attention to detail off the charts...and sure wish Hollywood could takes some notes from your videography. Seeing it in this state...it just sings in 7 part harmony to me! Thanks Chris...made my day! ~PJ

Great shot on the blue dissolving off the washers. I also really liked where you positioned the pre and post shellac piece in the same shot so you could transition between the two.

Brandon Fayer

I'm so ready to see the finished product. Flawless machining and camera work as always. I'm happy to know I live in a world where someone like you exists. Your use of napkins, paper and tape to protect the finish is very awesome and hilarious to me at the same time. There are so many moments at my work where I'm cradling a part with such said things telling myself, "You better not drop this eight hour finish or you have to do it all over again." Thanks again for the outstanding work Chris.

Zachary Hodge

Amazing.......Beautiful as always

kevin todd

That's just amazing Chris .

Mr Bryce Stoddart JP

Beautiful as always Chris. So you're up north eh, way too hot for me in summer. I'm in the ACT so freezing and seriously liking the idea of living up north during winter :-) How do you find the time and patience to make such elegant videos along with the clock. That Red Morrel timber is gorgeous.

Luke Pettit

Cheers Al, I'm thrilled with the result, it was definitely worth the effort.

Clickspring

The combination of the wood and the highly polished brass is amazing. I like the new design of the legs compared to the traditional one. Thanks again.
