A beautiful piece of wood for the clock base

The next clock episode is all about the support structure for the clock.

I've been meaning to cover this part of the build well before now, but I've been held up searching for something special to use as the timber base. Early last week I found what I've been looking for - This incredible piece of Red Mallee burl, courtesy of Djarilmari timbers in Western Australia ( http://www.djarilmari.com ). If you buy Australian hardwood burl in the US, chances are it was sourced from Djarilmari.

I'll make a start on machining this into shape over the weekend, so wish me luck!

I'm aiming for a full video release in approx 7 days, but I will publish a few preview clips of the episode over the next few days, to give you an idea of what I've been working on over the last few weeks.

Cheers,

Chris.

amazing piece of wood. Looking forward to a new video.

Nothing crazy, just a simple cove cut to open up the side surfaces to make the most of the figuring. I only have a 2 flute bit, but its doing a great job, and the spindle speed on the SX3 is not presenting any problem at all. As you say, a slow feed and the surface finish is coming out excellent. I won't need much more than the lightest touch of abrasive paper and that will be done. Even the mess wasn't a big deal, just chasing around the spindle with the vac kept most of it under control and I'll clean up the rest when I finish it on Sunday. So far so good :)

Chris, I suspect that your sherline will go plenty fast for this. A 4 flute mill will magnify that instead of using a one or two flute milling bit. And as they always say, slow down the feed for a smooth cut. (I think they say that) The only problem that I see is that you don't have the standard advantage that woodworkers do with a bit with a bearing on it for roundover type cuts. I have no idea what you are planning. Hope to see a video about what it is. If it's a crazy idea, you will get plenty of feedback before you commit the idea to reality. ( And no, I don't work for Sherline, but I did go buy a lot of their product after seeing what can be accomplished)

Don't give it a second thought mate, its the way they've set up the patron comment system - its caught me out a few times too! I don't really have much in the way of woodworking tools, so I will do it as you suggest with the mill. Its going to be a bit messy, but I have a decent vac system in the shop, so I'll try to minimise the dust. The only issue I can see is that the spindle doesn't really get fast enough for what router bits generally like, but I'll do a few test cuts to see if its going to give me a clean cut. The wood is quite dry and very dense so I'm fairly sure it will be fine. That mess tho... :)

Wow is it ever! I have decided to give it a french polish finish, to bring out that figuring. Cheers Charlie :)

Terrific to have your encouragement and support Jason, thank you :)

Yes definitely, and a fair bit messier than metal too! Cheers Colin :)

Sorry about the double post there. I thought hitting return would give me a paragraph. I am embarrassed. I haven't seen you working with traditional woodworking tools, but I sort of expect to see some interesting milling on it with one of your mills. Could be really nice. I haven't tried milling with a sherline, but the experience with the small routers on the X-Carve tells me that there is nothing wrong with using that piece of equipment to work on or cut on wood.

Charlie Robinson

That is a fantastic chunk of wood.

You are amazing Chris and inspirational.

Probably calls on a very different set of skills and techniques from working with metal. It will be interesting to watch, as are all the videos.

Colin Glanville

I could barely contain myself when I saw it - it has such amazing figuring, even without any finish it is stunning. Cheers mate :)

as someone who spend the last weeks looking at a lot of woodworking, I can unabashedly say this: this piece of wood is the most intriguing I have seen yet. And I am now looking forward to what you make of it.

Slayman

Cheers mate :)

Cheers Jess! I seem to be developing a routine where I go dark for 2 weeks, then as the video starts to take shape, I get a bit of time to re-engage. Very excited about this one, the other hardware parts have turned out great.

Hey Evan, the next hand vise video will be out approx 1 week after the next clock vid
