Spare Parts #11 - Making A 4 Flute Light Duty Dovetail Cutter

The "Impossible Dovetail" project requires a rather unique narrow taper dovetail cutter. So in this video I make my own from oil hardening (O1) tool steel. Enjoy!

Cheers,

Chris.

Yes chip relief, although if I was to do it again, I would make it two stage - a short "flat" section, followed by the chip relief. I unnecessarily weakened the tip by making it one stage. It's been wonderful having your support this year PJ, from the very beginning you have been so very encouraging and supportive - Thank you my friend.

Happy Holidays Chris! Nice Christmas eve wake up! Curious what angle you used on the foot of the cutter and why? Chip relief for the end?? Lovely as always and giggled at the overlay once again! ~PJ

It may, if the taper is narrow enough.

Cheers Chris! I think a tungsten router bit might work pretty well on that project.

Yes please!

Hey John, that's called "KAOwool" its a ceramic fiber. Let me know if you would like the plans, I will send you a link to download them for free.

Another great video. What is that woolly stuff you used with your torch? The impossible dovetail looks like it will be a great project.

John Creasey

Okay, that makes senses, thanks for replying!

Hey Bart, I've found that the edge generated by the grinder is superior after heat treating. It leaves a superb sharp edge that tends to get lost during the heat treat if it is ground first. Cheers mate :)

Very interesting, quick question, why didn't you form the relief angles before heat treating it? I would have thought that would have meant you didn't have to worry about heating it up at the grinder?
