Making A 'D' Bit Single Flute Milling Cutter

Hey Folks,

Here is the first of a set of 4 new videos - This one is about how to make an old school cutter known as a D Bit. I love making and using these cutters for milling and countersinking, but I particularly like them for drilling deep, straight holes. They are incredibly accurate, and can leave a surface finish that often approaches what you can get from a HSS reamer - and that's from a shop made drill!

I'm finishing off the editing of the other videos over the next few days, so stay tuned for more soon.

Cheers,

Chris.

Chris, you mention that the section of the cutter is just a hair from the centerline of the shank. Does that mean that you've left just over half of the original diameter or taken just over half? I was assuming that you meant left just over half, but thought I'd better check to be sure. Also, you mention that some relief behind the cutting edge would be helpful but tricky to get while avoiding damage to the cutting edge. Would it be of any help to relieve the rest of the circumference of the tool, away from the cutting edge, or is it only just behind the cutting edge that counts? Thanks!

Nice one Chris! Can't wait to see more

Thanks mate! 92º will help with the spring back when I bend on the cut line. It will make a bit more sense with the next video :)

Thanks Chris! Lots of great Tips. ~¿@ Curious why the 92º? Is that an optimum angle for some material or what you were making needed that angle? Just the best! ~PJ

Cheers David! Yes, the emery stick vid is on its way in the next few days.

I've known about D bits and yet somehow I never thought about making my own chamfering endmill. Thanks for that! (Also, I assume the emery stick is one of the ones you are about to post, since there wasn't a link....)

So true James, Enco etc tends to spoil us a bit!

A good reminder that we are machinists, we can make a lot of the tools we need. Case in point. I just received my D bit that I bought, waited a week to arrive when I could have made it in an hour or less.
