I use the belt grinder for some limited tool shaping tasks like getting into awkward areas to put in relief. But I tend to use the bench grinder for lathe tools - the reason being that the flex in the platen on the belt grinder inevitably leads to a less than perfect grind at the tool cutting edge. The rigidity of the grinding Al2O3 wheel, and the fact that it puts in a slight undercut is what you really want for lathe tools. You can usually pick them up very cheap brand new, and they last for ages.

2017-05-12 07:54:27 +0000 UTCHey Toby, I made the adaptor plates from aluminium. Its nice and easy to work with and readily available. For indicating the spindle, I mount the magnetic indicator base on the side of the lathe bed.
