Inside a very cost optimised "100W" bulb

Aside from the fact that this is actually a 20W LED bulb and has no smoothing, the construction is actually quite interesting. It uses punched aluminium sheet to form a large 3D heatsink.

Interesting. Thanks Big Clive. The heat sink looks like the best part of it I guess, providing a lot of surface area but it looks like they didn't put any schmu on it.

You can get away without a smoothing cap if you're prepared to sacrifice efficiency. I have a product which runs inside a bridge taking 3.2mA (for safety), at a maximum voltage of around 30V. The remaining voltage is mostly dissipated by a FET. The current is virtually a square wave, with very little "off" time. I doubt there would be much flicker if the 30V were an LED. Actually there are several RGB LEDs, so this can be tested.
