Additions to Gut Repair Protocol
Added 2021-11-22 13:27:11 +0000 UTCI’ve been experimenting a bit on myself to share more with you all regarding gut repair.
Less so foods, but I will make sure to include viable food sources for the supplements I’ll be including to this protocol.
The first addition is butyrate, I just used the basic Bodybio brand (sodium/potassium and calcium/magnesium, all positive studies on butyrate are done with sodium butyrate, that ultra expensive Tributyrin supplement isn’t necessary). Start with 1-2 capsules and see how you feel, I increased to the recommended 6 capsules a day but it may not be necessary for you. I leveled out around the 2-4 capsule intake per day and often don’t take it. Not only is it an INCREDIBLE anti-inflammatory for the entire gut, and thus brain, but that reduced inflammation allows repair processes to be restarted and it contributes to repopulating the gut microbiome in a more healthy way. The food sources to increase butyrate-producing bacteria endogenously are starches, preferably cold (rice, potatoes, green bananas… I like rice personally and this is what I paired with the supplement), then dairy and butter, more specifically goat dairy/butter has a higher butyric acid content than other milks, hence the “gamey” taste some report. They likely have low butyrate production. It also seems to be used as a fuel substrate because it energizes me quite significantly, and not even just from reduced gut inflammation. I typically take it in the morning and then before lifting to reduce gut detriment from heavy lifting (endotoxins). Egg intolerance is often an indication for low butyrate production. Even better when paired with a form of acetate/acetic acid.
For acetate/acetic acid, I utilize magnesium acetate which benefits fat and carbohydrate metabolism and digestion, however apple cider vinegar can be utilized if unable to find Mg acetate. Acetate is another fuel substrate that goes into the Krebs cycle. ACV also seems to have anti-depressant properties, likely via energy metabolism and gut inflammation/repair mechanism. You’ll want to introduce to the tune of around 1-2 tbsp diluted in a glass of water then rinse mouth with more water to ensure no damage to the enamel. Have this with your heavier meals.
Lastly, glutamine megadosing. Now, you will have to be extremely careful if you have a urea cycle disorder. I ended up inducing hyperammonemia as I am sensitive to this issue with autism liver genetics present, but most should not have this issue whatsoever. I would still recommend including either ornithine, arginine (avoid if you have herpes), or citrulline to ensure urea production and ammonia elimination regardless. Those with GABA/glutamate imbalance may also be sensitive to this supplement as it can convert into glutamate if the GABA shunt is impaired in any way. Start with low doses as always to gauge how you respond.
So glutamine makes up most of the cells within the gut and is shown to tighten those junctions and strengthen gut integrity, while also being powerfully anti-inflammatory. This was even noticeable for me despite having already resolved leaky gut so I do believe it will make a very useful addition to this protocol. For food sources, red meats and bone broth (go figure) have the highest content available, though higher doses may be necessary for this purpose. You’ll want to intake 10-20g per day in cycles, say 1-2 weeks on 1-2 weeks off. Space this out throughout the day, around 10g with each heavier meal. It can be dissolved in water, but it is better to toss it back with a glass of water and chase with more water before or after your meal. Up to 30g per day if you’re on the heavier side.
A red + infrared lamp can also be extremely useful since winter is approaching for most folks and sunlight may not be as present as you’d all like. Make sure to shine directly on bare gut and lower back to penetrate this area. Anti-inflammatory and pro-positive bacteria impacts from this.
I just wanted to share some thoughts I’ve recorded and had this morning, hoping it will benefit you all.
I’ll be doing the livestream Q&A this week, just need to find a good time to do so between spending time with my wife and daughter. I touched down in NY last night safely and will be returning home on the 2nd.
I wish you all well and happy Thanksgiving for my US patrons! 🙏😊💗
