José might look quiet and unassuming, but he was very much a “take charge” sort of guy. And he soon found which were the right buttons to push to make his “Papa” eat out of the palm of his hand.

I guess Maurice did not expect that Jose had far better rope skills than expected. Maurice was convinced that he could free himself easily. He had a lot of experience but somehow he soon discovered that José's ropework did not allow Maurice to free himself, and José had plenty of time watching Maurice standing there, "ready for use". And José know very well how he could use Maurice. And he had no plans to release Maurice anytime soon. Jose could keep Maurice like this all weekend. And Maurice would eat what Jose chose to serve.
