COMICS Q&A -- Ask Away!

Hey there, as I promised earlier I am planning to write up an in-depth post on what it's been like working on a graphic novel (as someone who never really wanted to do graphic novels nor had any experience), and now that the whole first book of ARDEN HIGH is completely sketched out (I am awaiting revisions at the moment), I thought it would be a great time also to take any questions you have about my experience/comics in general. I have a basic idea of what the post will contain and what I'll be explaining to you about the process, but I'd love to know what kind fo specifics you want to know about!

Please hoot and holler and scream at me!

Do you have any tips for drawing consistent characters throughout a story? Did you plan character sheets from all different angles beforehand? V excited to hear all your comic wisdom !!

Alice B

I would love to know how you feel when your doing projects like these? Also how do you feel with Procreate while doing a comic? Are you doing a file for each page and if so how are you keeping it consistent or would have advice to keep it consistent? :o

I would love if you touch the mental health part of working on a big project. I recently finished a 2 (or was it 3?) month project and by the end of it, I hated that it occupied my mind all the time. This anxiety that I will fail a deadline was just crippling me. I know this sketching phase plus other projects took a toll on you too. I would love to hear your take on how to not step into this shiiitake again. Of if stepping, doing it more consciously and with some life -saving snack packs. Also CONGRATS!!!

hello! congrats on the graphic novel! I have a couple questions: (1) any tips on making the panels/layouts less predictable? (2) any tips on getting better with figure drawing… im trying to get back into it and everything looks so AWKWARD and like it has a stick up it’s ass how do I make them look natural and flowy 👁👄👁 thank you!!

Because this was your first time on a project like this, what was the prep like? Did you practice before diving in?

What do you feel was your best resource when developing comics for the first time?

Alyssa Maziarz

1.) How do you plan out your panels/format your pages? Did you find yourself needing to switch up some panel layouts bc some of them felt repetitive? 2.) How do you feel like illustration vs. comics compare in terms of workload? Are there certain elements you prioritize in graphic novels because of the limited time frame? 3.) When drawing your characters, how you keep them looking consistent through the whole graphic novel/did you struggle with any style changes when drawing your characters? Thanks Jamie! :)

Michelle Nguyen

During the research process, what resources/references did you used to better understand graphic novel mechanics? What are things you find rewarding and/or challenging when sketching the graphic novel or just the overall process? And lastly but not leastly, how do you feel right now with the project overall?

Faye Thai

1. What will coloring look like for you? If you know yet. 2. How did you compose environments/backgrounds/buildings? 3. Was Procreate a good tool for making comics? 4. If you could illustrate any book/series, which one would you? 5. (Hope this one isn't too personal) Financially, is illustrating novels a sufficient source of income?

Bea McCormick

1. When is the playlist DROPPING THO 2. How do you keep your perspectives and scenes interested? How have your past works and studies helped with composing interesting frames? 3.
