December Step-by-Step

Hello my friends, this longer-than-usual step-by-step features information on how I compose images and design/stylize human characters--both requests by you guys! First I explain previous pieces and talk you through what was going through my head when making them, and then in the later half of the video I show you in live-time how I do it. I really hope you enjoy--this was tricky for me to explain (it's amazing how hard it is to articulate the information) but I hope it makes sense. If there's anything I missed or anything more you would like to know, please say so!

Enjoy, friends.

I especially love when you can see people genuinely having fun while drawing and the humour in your drawings is just *italianschefskiss*

i really like the fact that you put stuff in the middle of your work because it gives you more room to play with making it busy around the main focus?? thanks for sharing your insight as well this was very very helpful!

Great video! Thanks for sharing :) It was definitely not too long at all!

Love hearing your thought process and getting a little lesson is there too. A main reason I use patreon is to see the behind the scenes of work and to learn things I might learn if I went to art school.

I loved this video! The tips you gave were really insightful and easy to understand, I adored watching the drawing of the quirky, mini-you come to life. Also, I live for videos that are on the longer-side, so I wouldn't mind if this went on for even longer haha. Thank you again for sharing this! ✨

Lara!! This was such a wonderful comment to read. I completely agree (and feel very fortunate) that practice does absolutely lead to comfort. It makes the process so much more streamlined and efficient. In the future I would definitely like to make a stylization video on things other than humans. Maybe I will fill up a sketchbook page and talk it through as I do so. Thanks for the suggestion and wonderful words.

I love your casual/candid approach of voiceover/narration. It's truly a delight watching you sketch.

as a big lover of long videos, this honestly could've gone on even longer and I wouldn't mind at all! I would love to see a similar video but with the twist of you making a character out of a thing - a vegetable, an animal, an abstract idea, a cryptid... just something non-human. My favourite things that you draw are your quirky little characters that feature more heavily in your sketchbooks and I remember all the ones you've gone through over the years - peach head, for example. It's also interesting to see how much of your work is already shorthand by now, it really drives home that practice makes confidence and you've built a really nice repertoire of visual cues and references

Feeling is so important because it gives your work a voice! It has something unique to say. I'm really happy you pulled that from this video. I am definitely planning on doing some ASMR like you mentioned--the tapping sounds are so relaxing to me too! Thanks Milo. :-)

I only was able to watch it now, Jamie. I love this video! I didn't mind the "rumbling" at all, hahaha, actually I appreciate it. I don't know if I could have understood what you meant or how you feel about your work otherwise. Amazing video! And thank you very much for all the tips!! <3

this was my favorite video by far! these tips were great since i have a lot of trouble in stylization and i just loved it so much, i love both styles and i think the more realistic one better ,but only in portraits if that makes sense, so watching how you make proportions was really helpful! i definitely need to practice a lot but as you said at the very begging of this patreon, planting the seeds is important tooπŸ’– i can’t wait to see if you’ll post that tiny little jamie to instagram! thanks you so much for sharing your process with usπŸ§šπŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Jamieee what a wonderful video!! It was so interesting to see how you think about things as you draw them and the way you consider what FEELINGS you want to give off. That's something I think I'd like to pay more attention to in my own art, being really conscious of each decision I make and ensuring it's playing some kind of role? yeah... Anyway, I don't know if this is something you've considered, but I especially liked hearing the tapping of your pencil on the ipad as you drew and thought that could make a good asmr video also?! It was quite relaxing hehe. Like maybe some whispering, emphasis on the light tapping, and drawing somethin' fun n cozy :') I dunno!! Anyway, thanks so much for putting this video together and gracing us with such insightful content!
