Punt City 2 cEDH Tournament
Added 2023-03-23 21:34:23 +0000 UTCFor the Punt City 2 cEDH main event this coming weekend, I am playing Tymna + Kraum "Blue Farm." This is the macro archetype that I won Okotoberfest with last year with. It's basically "all the best cards" blue soup with Thassa's Oracle and Breach Combo as win conditions.
The deck was introduced to me as a "Turbo Ad Nauseam combo deck with card advantage in the command zone." In my time tuning and playing the deck, the biggest lesson I've learned is that this an awful Turbo Ad Naus deck. Not only are we bad at Turbo Naus, we're bad at being both Turbo and being Ad Naus individually. The games I was winning weren't the games I presented a quick Ad Nauseam with counter protection, it was the games where I had Tymna and/or Kraum in play pushing for damage and card advantage while I laid low and built out my board while sculpting my hand.
To this end, I cut the worst tutor (Imperial Seal), the short-term gain long-term loss cards (Pact of Negation and City of Traitors), and all but one of the Draw 7s (kept Wheel, cut Twister and Windfall) in favor of more creatures.
Don't waste your interaction on stax pieces. Let those Stax pieces control the dedicated combo decks so you can save your interaction for things you care about. Let the board stall out. Our suite of evasive beaters and asymmetrical disruption creatures will keep people off balance while drawing cards from our commanders and slowly but surely reducing life totals. I've won games with non-commander combat damage, don't be afraid of a grind.
Quick hits:
A fast Rhystic Study will win more games than a fast Naus or Breach. Use early tutors to lock down long-term advantage.
Tymna is a good stand-in for Rhystic Study that is always available. Mulligan for hands that can curve into her or accelerate her.
Tymna draws more cards than Kraum and is harder to kill due to Pryo and Hydro blasts. Prioritize getting her going.
You usually fetch Badlands first, then Tundra. Context matters, but that's generally how I start games.
Never Naus or Breach unless you can 100% lock it down with a Silence effect or you're dead on the next turn if you don't try.
Grand Abolisher is the best Silence and the main reason Cavern of Souls is in the deck. It will tear open any stalled board state. But it will also paint you as the target, only deploy when it's go time.
