Tropeognathus: The Sky Cleaver of the Cretaceous

Tropeognathus was a giant pterosaur that ruled the skies during the Early Cretaceous. With a wingspan reaching up to 8 meters, it was one of the largest flying animals to ever exist. Its name means "keel jaw," a reference to the long snout with a sharp crest on top and bottom. This jaw was lined with pointed teeth, perfect for grabbing slippery fish from the ocean below.

It may have skimmed the waves with its beak or snatched prey in midair. Its hollow bones made it light, while its massive wings gave it great control and speed in flight.

Though it looked like a dinosaur, Tropeognathus was a pterosaur, part of a separate group of reptiles. It was both strange and elegant, with the body of a glider and the jaws of a hunter. In the skies of ancient Earth, few could match its grace and power.

I was inspired to explore this incredible by the episode of Walking with Dinosaurs that featured Ornithocheirus. The scenes of it gliding over ancient seas stuck with me. Tropeognathus and Ornithocheirus are very similar in appearance. Both had long wings, crested jaws, and a life spent soaring above the waves in search of prey.
