Nothronychus is one of the most unusual dinosaurs ever discovered in North America, a feathered, pot-bellied theropod with long, curved claws and a slow, lumbering gait. Unlike its fearsome carnivorous relatives, this oddball was a gentle herbivore, likely feeding on leaves and soft vegetation.
I was first inspired to illustrate this remarkable creature after watching the classic documentary When Dinosaurs Roamed America, which brought Nothronychus to life in a way that truly captured my imagination. Its strange anatomy and peaceful lifestyle stood out in a world dominated by predators.
This dinosaur will be featured in my upcoming Cretaceous-themed book, where it will appear alongside the more famous Therizinosaurus and a host of other fascinating prehistoric creatures, each one chosen to reveal the unexpected diversity and wonder of the ancient world!
