I caught it about the same age and my parents, rather than pray, let the doctors give me (at the time) experimental medications in the hope of saving my life. The risks were that the medications could leave me blind, deaf, or with mental disabilities... but alive, and less severely affected than letting the fever run. They told the doctors that they cared more about keeping me ALIVE than having a child with a disability. And they made the right choice- I came through without any 'close calls' thanks to those medications. Another little girl on the same treatment became deaf but our parents were just so relieved that we both pulled through, They later got me all the optional childhood vaccines, too, which i am ALWAYS grateful for.

2023-03-24 22:02:18 +0000 UTCAbout the fever - I had meningitis when I was 11 months old, and I'm one of the 5% of babies who catch it that young that don't have debilitating brain damage from it. I credit my mom, who instead of praying kept a close eye on me and hounded nurses and doctors when she saw any indication my fever was getting high again. And yeah, without modern medicine there's a real good chance I'd have died then.
