I always thought that wasn't one of his better things. The problem with the Laffer curve isn't that it's somehow way more complicated than it's made out to be. The problem is that (a) people pretend that whatever the current marginal tax rate, it's to the right of the peak, so there will be more revenue when you lower it, and (b) people willfully confuse marginal and average and claim that, assuming for some reason you'd managed to get to the wrong side of the curve, the only thing you can do is "cut taxes" as in cut the average rate — while actually, in many cases, you can cut the marginal rate without cutting the average rate. You're seeing this again now: the "Trump tax plan" is supposed to cut rates and fund that just by randomly cutting outlays that happen to be unpopular with Trump voters and/or borrowing, and at the same time, it maintains the mortgage interest deduction (while of course offering nothing remotely comparable for renters). This is the thing about US conservatives and economics: they're more willing to use the LANGUAGE of economics, but they will ignore the details just as much as anyone else.

"We have to play fair. " Well our beliefs may seem nonsensical to "them"...but they are not nonsensical in reality. Their beliefs on the other hand are truly nonsensical and ridiculous in this day and age. There is no commutative property here. It only goes one way.

BTW, Martin Gardner was a skeptic and a mathematician. He wrote an hysterical send up of the Laffer Curve (what trickle down is based on) and invented the joke of the Neo-Laffer curve. There's a great collection of his writings worth having and coming back to again and again called "The Night is Large".

Ahhhhhh....North Carolina..... my home..... I love NC, but not because of its legislature. It's more because of its latitude. Short winters, short summers, long springs and fall. It also has great beaches, a lov-er-ly piedmont (you'll be on the edge of that...), and the mountains, which are beautiful. (I believe Martin Gardner used to live in Hickory.) It used to be full of art and music. Never forget NC was targeted for punishment because we voted for Obama in '08. The ridiculous Teabagger legislature we have now is really an anomaly. They don't govern. They react to pet peeves. They have been shot down (like with your news here)from doing the actual harm they intend, even tho' they tenuously cling to shaky "victories". A great reason to have Reason Con here! It's a "fuck you" to the millionaires/billionaires trying to turn NC into a conservative utopia (shudder!)

Great diatribe as usual - but surely a misstep at the end? We can't claim 'bigotry', citing lesbians and Jews as comparators, when theists mock our ideas. Our beliefs are, after all, as nonsensical to them as theirs are to us. We have to play fair. Stuart
