Joe Bob’s Thought of the Day: Avicii Edition

They were using Avicii music today as transitions during the Vikings-Giants game, and every time I hear Avicii it makes me sad--because of how messy that suicide was, because of how young he was. I guess we should be grateful that they're preserving his work by constantly licensing it out, but shouldn't we stop every once in a while and ask why our culture chews up so many young talented people? They don't even mention his name anymore when they use the music.

(The video I included is from one of our first road trips, back in 2018. It’s when I really realized there’s a lot more to JB than we even know…Who expected him to be an Avicii fan? 🖤)

JB proves once again why he's my guy. Avicii's suicide was sad. I haven't done a deep dive but I wonder how much of it was due to fear over how his audience was going to treat his future ideas. I remember him going to Miami's Ultra festival (*huge* electronic music festival, for those who don't know) and including banjos in his music. That really upset the crowd. I'm sure he didn't take that well. Throw in the grind of performing all the time in order to keep your name out there (and keep it there), which he refused to participate in once it wore him down too much, and that's not a good combo for somebody who I'd imagine was already inclined towards negative thoughts and anxiety. :( RIP Avicii.

Ten New Songs is really good. His first album since his time in a Buddhist monastery which is minutes north of me in Mt. Baldy which has some Drive In history. The beginning of Commando was filmed there.

JB never stops amazing us with his wisdom.

The best comedy is out of tragedy. Just look at Pryor and Christopher Titus.

Definitely going to check out his jazz stuff. This is a great year to listen to jazz because of the ambient, you know, chaos.

Kurt Cobain would be spinning in his grave knowing what millennials and zoomers have done to HIS post suicide legacy. I always preferred the other 3 from Seattle and even Smashing Pumpkins over Nirvana but it's still sad that his "fanbase" are of the 2 camps of "I thought this shirt was cool" and "I only know the hits and I never listened to Bleach" crowd. Still not as bad as what Courtney Love has done, though. Just ask Dave Grohl and Frances.

The sad irony is that he sang at Cornell's funeral by singing Cohen's Hallelujah. Fittingly, I got into Cohen last year. It's nice solitude in this chaotic times especially with his post 90s albums that are jazzier sounding.

Anthony Bourdain and latter day Chris Cornell comes to mind. Chris seemed to be less depressed as he became an elder statesman like his buddies in Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. You wouldn't know it listening to his last solo album which was a great comeback after the awful Scream.

Sadly we never know what’s going on inside someone.

It's another example of someone producing something or appearing to be happy and cheerful because they feel they have to be but really they're not.

Sorry to say I have no idea who Avicii is. Looking him up didn't really help. Guess I missed it!

Avicii gets discarded so bad. His music was the moment fr in 2011. and people still make fun of Linkin Park and it leaves me gobsmacked. I don't hold my tongue about it anymore. Poor Chester Bennington.

Robin Williams as well. He did so much for so many people that it’s just crushing thinking what he was going through.
