Most New Yorkers were startled to witness the wild street celebration when Morocco defeated Portugal to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup--because nobody knew there were that many Moroccans living in New York.
The place they celebrated was Steinway Street in Astoria, Queens, the same street where Steinway pianos have been made by hand since 1880 because of the German immigrant Henry Steinway, and the same Steinway Street where Tony Bennett first sang a song because of his Italian immigrant parents, and the same Steinway Street where all the best Greek restaurants are located because they came through as well. So Germans, Italians, Greeks and Moroccans all passed over the same plot of ground on their way to becoming Americans--not to mention Maltese, Lebanese, Croatians, Galicians and Bangladeshis--and this history of accepting foreigners in a place like Astoria is not only beautiful to behold, but it's what keeps us safe and what keeps us free.
