seems to me that a #4 shot is about the right balance of knock out power and not blasting holes through 2 or more houses. I saw a video years ago of someone testing it. I would love to see you guys do some experiments. Bird shot, #4 and 00 and see what hits the ballistic gel and penetrates drywall, etc...

2020-01-27 06:42:24 +0000 UTCI have an 18" 870 with a cylinder bore. I use 3 2-3/4" BB shot (to avoid overpenetration going into the neighbor's house) backed up with 00 buck. I get a 16" pattern at 30'. I'd say that that's good for middle-of-the-night, minute of bad guy.
