California AR-Pistol? Yes it exists

Gregg talks about his AR pistol and how it is totally legal.

California AR-Pistol? Yes it exists

Comments

If you've got the wrists to fire a .50 BMG pistol more than once, more power to you... I got the chance once to fire a M82 from a bench. The recoil was handled way better than the .300WinMag of my brother's, but the muzzle blast out of the brake was able to push over a 5lb Folger's can full of spent brass several feet to the side of me.

There isn't one. It's funny you ask that specific question, because there is a ban in California on 50 BMG rifles. Technically speaking, 50 BMG pistols are all good here. :)

....I can't believe you.....you didn't bother to mention how many you would need if the wind wasn't cooperative! The nerve!

What's the caliber limit on pistols in California?

Wheezy Steve

I bit my tongue in internet forums while the drafts of this bill were going around, and one major flaws in the language that passed is they changed from prohibiting guns that "could accept a detachable magazine" to prohibiting guns that "did not have a fixed magazine." So it's legal to have a gun that accepts a detachable magazine now so long as it ALSO has a fixed magazine. I kinda want to make an AR-15 upper with a magazine well sticking out the left side with a one-round magazine in it that you can't remove. Then just leave it empty and use it with a normal lower.

Ryan Simpson

Per the letter of the law, as long as the magazine can not be removed while the action of the firearm is assembled, it is a fixed magazine pistol and is thus allowed to have shoulder things that go up, etc. There are not specifics about what has to be involved with removing the magazine once the action is disassembled.

Ryan Simpson

Not if it were loaded, no. If it were unloaded and you put a small lock on the zippers, you'd be good to go without a permit. I don't have a tennis racket bag, but when I go to the range I use a benign-looking take-down bag from Emdomusa for my ARs. As for CCWs, I think they're in either Tulare or Fresno county (omg! dox!) where the sheriffs are shall-issue, so average people can get them. The issue then is you have to list specific pistols on your permit and do a shooting qual with them, and some sheriffs won't let you list AR-pistols. I don't know how common or uncommon that is, though, I live in LA County where carry is completely impossible so doing too much research on it makes me sad.

On videos like this, there are many really foul-mouthed comments that wind up in the spam folder and it takes me a few days to sort them out. I often remind people to keep the comments civil but some people can't control themselves.

TAOFLEDERMAUS

It was more of an academic question and not pertaining to fixed magazines. More to the letter or the law and not the idea. If a rifle automatically disassembled itself just prior to removing the magazine, and then reassembled itself automatically as magazine is being placed would this conform to the letter of the law? I don't live in California. This is simply trivial curiosity.

It might but it's not the answer to the problem. These work arounds are just temporary relief until ca.gov catches up on the technicality.

CCW1911

Is that in California?

CCW1911

Are you censoring comments on the video or is it youtube?

CCW1911

New video series? Cool gun features/rounds created by dumb laws?

Where I work selling firearms, we have one in the pistol display case for sale. As long as you are over 21, and pass the BCI check, you can walk out the door with it and as many magazines as you want

Terry McDade

Depends on your sheriff. In some counties it's easy, in some it's impossible.

watt smith

I should have clarified...a non law enforcement person could NOT carry that tennis racket bag with an AR pistol or any other pistol in it out in public unless they got a unicorn California concealed weapons permit. Right?

Jeeeebus, I thought that was a sorta elaborate joke/troll, but then I looked it up. You poor buggers.

Anders Weidik Bendsen

That's actually not the case. The four biggest things he can do as law enforcement, in relation to his job or not, while ignoring the laws on the rest of us are buying handguns not on California's frozen white-list, taking guns home with him at purchase instead of waiting 10 days, buying magazines over ten rounds, and ordering ammo directly to his house online. Police don't have a private ownership exemption for assault weapons, and it is currently possible for an average person to acquire the firearm Greg showed.

Ryan Simpson

Those who legally own grandfathered magazines that hold over ten rounds need to be careful. Using them with a pistol configured this way violates PC 30515(a)(5)

Ryan Simpson

Keep up the good fight for California.

Eugene Luder

IANAL but my understanding is that as long as you have to disassemble the gun to remove it, it's not considered a fixed magazine.

Nate

Really dude?

What if a 2 stage button was designed that opened/broke the action and released the magazine with a single button press, and a cantilevered system closed the action just before a magazine was inserted? Would that be legal? Or does it need to be independent actions?

I'm an economic refugee from the People's Republik of Illinois. I moved to Iowa simply due to the cost of living being much lower. However, getting my carry permit in two weeks for only $60 (IIRC) was icing on the cake. Illinois isn't quite as bad as CA, but they are working on it.

Dr. Strangelove

Only legal because he's a cop. Not legal for Citizens of California who haven't sworn fealty to the Crown.

If u catch the wind in the right direction three W88 warhead air bursts would eliminate 99% of the retards in the beautiful state of California. Resettlement in said sanitized areas could commence in less than 10 years!

Great video!
