I think the bigger problem is that the conversation about Jaxon's charisma in book 2 means that he didn't hear any of it and therefore is still in the dark about why he should put more points into charisma. Hell, he could probably spend some time with a trainer and raise it fairly quickly since it is so low. I think he still doesn't know about the thresholds even if he should know from increasing his stats past the first one. I would also assume that his luck has prevent a lot of situations where he would die and also depending on how it works. You could say Jaxon's luck is what got Joe to save him in book 2. His lack of perception and really poor karmic luck is generally what kills him. It could be said that other than the self sacrifice in book 2, he generally gets off pretty well when he does go. Generally dieing horribly but relatively quickly.
