Question. Why not have Joe pick up Cartography? It would help with his Dexterity and Intelligence at the very least. It would also up his drawing skill fast enough. Vellum or thin leather squares that are 2x2 feet, ink, and a specialized quill. He could probably even donate them to Boris after a bit, or double check his work through maps in the library.

I think inserting "down" there will make it easier to understand the use of the past perfect tense. 2. "Joe started reading the each face of the squares [...]" probably should be "Joe started reading each face of the squares [...]" By the way, it's amazing how this already has so few typos and other mistakes in it!
