Why the Anti-Woke Right Has So Many Atheists

Boy oh boy did this make some (a lot) of people (conservative men) mad at me. I don’t think I’ve been insulted and accused of malice and dishonesty this much since I made my video debunking the “90% detransition rate” myth. There’s also an astonishing number of commenters criticizing me while admitting they refused to watch the video! With the political turmoil we’re in and the depth of propaganda out there right now, I’m not surprised. You, my actual audience, seemed to really like the video even if you didn’t resonate with the anti-theism section as much as I do.

I’m very happy with how this video came out and working with my friend Ocean Keltoi was a real treat. He’s a pretty brilliant guy and has taught me a lot. Who else should I collab with?

Thank you for all the support this month! The next one should be about religion in Mad Max and how authoritarians use religion for their own gain.

Why the Anti-Woke Right Has So Many Atheists

Oof yep I joined American Atheist back when David Silverman was president, and I remember the God Virus book and the End of Faith and Manual for Creating Atheists. I had long changed my views slowly over time but this reminds me I once bought in to this stuff about religion being a mind virus. It’s eye opening to notice how easy it is to get drawn into that, especially as a former Evangelical with a lot of anger toward my former faith. Like I said before, oof!

Having spent over a decade in the atheist space, I also feel like I saw parallels in the New Atheist movement and religious preachers. It almost felt like people weren't being presented atheism on its on merits but because "religious people are dumb." The irony I think is that it failed to encourage the critical thinking it claimed to value. The atheists I've found to be the strongest allies are ones that left because of moral objections to their religion. I've seen a lot of anti-theists maintain a dogmatic attraction to their stance that I find problematic. Also I wanted to point out that I identify as an anti-theist, but I'm not sure how accurately that label defines me. I would love to speak to someone with a more nuanced perspective that understands the differences between anti-theists and pluralists because I think I might be wrong about what all that means.
