Web or mobile? That is the question.

Hello everyone! We have a quick question for you as we explore ideas for the development of Human Interface Proxy War. We're considering offering players greater freedom through a full-fledged squad builder. Imagine having complete control over your squad's composition, upgrades, and weapons, wound track and other options in future—what do you think?

To make this feature as accessible as possible, we’d love your input on the optimal platform to start with. Which would you prefer?

Thank you in advance for your time and feedback. Your vote will help shape the future of the game!

Sounds like a lot of dev knowledge in the group. I’m Also a dev, progressive web app is the way to go. Done right it will work on all devices. Sure you give up the native mobile app upsides (notifications and offline modes) but even some of those features have been resolved now. Do NOT get yourselves caught in the App Store maintenance cycles and cost. Really not worth it

It's not an armybuilder but if you want an example of how to handle the cards compatible multi platform could check out Cast N Plays Nebulawargame.com for an example. They never add content to it but the display with a mobile web browser is freaking sweet to me. Another example though even better is Heroscape's current one on https://playheroscape.renegadegamestudios.com/ Renegade is doing good with that one actually they added not only older units jpegs and rules to their builder and card database but have a way to update them easily and putting new units in before they release even. Works on mobile browsers handily as well.

WOW. That's the spirit! Counting all platforms more than 400 votes. Great. There is nothing left to do but act. Thanks for your time and effort!

While mobile is great since you can access it anywhere it would be nice to have the ability to still access a web version of the app so that things can be printed out if needed

Salamander_Louie

Web, definately! The app should be accessible and usable from a mobile device's web browser, of course (so think responsive web) but the ability to access the app on non-mobile devices is paramount.

Chris

This is great. Hope the new rulebook comes out soon! With that combined I'd love to get games going in my LGS

KAGiROU

There are frameworks out there that allow you to build for both using the same codebase...

Doctah Seuss

Web application is a good idea, but at a demo or club meet or similar, where there is no web access, mobile would be far more useful. The few gatherings that occur on my rock are done at an old holiday camp and there is no internet there, but one can easily grab a mobile connection from a nearby tower.

Pete Sims

A web interface is going to be more stable to design than a mobile app and so I support that option.

Gregory Morris

Both Responsive web design is the key. Progressive is a nice idea but died out. And make it open source. There are ways to keep the data sovereignty but use the community to help. If you wish send me a PM and the can establish a format that involves the skills of the willing community members

As a soft. dev. I can say I've seen plenty companies moving away from OS specific solutions. Even more when OS change requirements and make APPs obsolete with "old" hardware. Meanwhile web based apps have improved a lot and you can install a web in a phone like a native APP, with offline capabilities and 3D if needed by.

Why just take inspiration from newrecruit? It's game system agnostic and all you have to do is put the unit data in GitHub. Don't reinvent the wheel, save cost. If you don't like battlescribe format there is always rosterizer.

WiseKensai

A mobile version is a great idea. Everything you need is at your fingertips.

Now it 50% to 50%. How to decide. Making both? : ) Thanks for your time.

UNIT9

That's right.

UNIT9

That's right. It seems like a good option.

UNIT9

We aspire to create both. :)

UNIT9

Yes we know but on the other hand web version also have an offline options. We would like to prepare both options but in is matter of costs and maintance.

UNIT9

Thanks for your vote. PM sent.

If you do an App it will only work in phones/tablets. If you do it in web, you can have it everywhere.

DimLud

Wehen designing a mobile App you have the Problem hat in truth you Design two. Android and IOS. As a Web Applikation optimised for mobile Devices you most likely Cover more ground.

DiceDragon

If you would be able to do both it would be ideal. However a mobile app for phones and tablets would be most useful.

Matt Robertson

Whichever way, offline functionality is key. Taking a tablet to a game store that might not have wi-fi, it's much more convenient if it doesn't need online data to work

Gargamel

Progressive web app is the way you want to go. Make adaptive design and it would work on either desktop and mobile where it can be installed as application. Take inspiration from mantic companion and new recruit apps, they have really great user experience. If you are looking for some advice, you are welcome to send me a message :)
