Textual update

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone, all the people who have stuck with me for the past 4 years, those who have come and gone, and to all the new subscribers recently. There has been quite a large influx of new people joining over the past few weeks which I think is due to a combination of the Youtube video by soundlearn and also an article on the Sonicstate website.

When I get a sudden increase in subscribers like this I always seem to get overwhelmed and have to sort of mentally recalibrate. I don't know if that makes any sense but the general coping mechanism at play here is to block people out more than usual and just concentrate on coding so apologies if I am slow to respond to messages.

I am not focusing at all on bug reports at the moment but I will try to go through everything that people have been reporting on Discord before the next build I release. I think the current build is relatively stable and it is probably just the same few crashes that people are reporting.

Unfortunately since Blockhead is not a finished product it is not going to be suitable yet for real-world usage but those of you who have been here for a while know that occasionally I will put a hold on working on new features to focus on bug fixing and stability, just so that those who are trying to make stuff are not getting too frustrated with it.

From experience I know that trying to keep things 100% bug-free and stable during heavy feature development always ends up to be a massive waste of time but I will maybe try to have another week or so of concentrating on bug fixes after I finish implementing the CLAP effect rack.

For those who haven't been following, what I am currently working on is the first iteration of CLAP plugin support. This will be an real-time effect rack which goes on the end of any top-level workspace track, onto which you can place free-running (not baked) audio effects. So then we will finally have access to some proper mixing and mastering facilities within Blockhead, via CLAP plugins.

This is all going fine so far and I haven't hit any major problems. It is just a case of getting on with the coding. Plugin support is quite complex and there is a lot of work to do, and so the first iteration of the effect rack will be very barebones but will be fleshed out more and more in later updates. There will likely be no parameter control (outside of the plugin's custom editor), and no automation or preset management to start with.

After the effect rack is implemented, there will be more CLAP support added:

So there is a little roadmap just for the CLAP related stuff. Usually when I write up these kind of bullet point lists they just get interrupted by other plans or the ideas end up evolving into other things but I am happy as long as things are moving forwards.

Keep up the good work, man! You're doing great!

After trying many different daws with varying levels of detail and difficulty to learn, it was a breath of fresh air to discover your creation that implements simple ways to work with audio. I'm really grateful of your efforts and love you put in this awesome project since it make my life easier to experiment.

Absolute genius developer

Keep doing what you're doing friend ! Coming from a photographer and designer, Your interface intuition is on point !!!

Craig Hubbard

I did indeed subscribe due to seeing a youtube video. Having a blast messing around with blockhead and having tonnes of fun. No expectations, do your thing and keep up the awesome work.

Jesse Bourret - Gheysen

I clicked the buttons, would you like to make a short video demonstrating it? I just upgraded my subscription. I wasn't kidding, you get this out of Alpha, and I am 100% onboard. I have never had an easier time chopping breaks other than on a Tracker like Renoise.

David Harmon

I'm not sure? Would it be too much to ask for video on it? I click the drop down, and it gives me a window, but the controls in the window don't respond at all. Not sure if it's an issue with my machine or what. Not trying to be a pest, I just wanted this to be my new DAW, it's like a cross between FL Studio and Renoise.

David Harmon

I just did. Are you performing the procedure correctly?

Nathan Photos

what do i need to learn in order to help u

Stanislav Liabikhov

I still can't export on Mac.

David Harmon

one day this is gonna be one of the biggest DAWS out there.

As a new subscriber, let it be known that the whole reason I joined is that I see something magical in Blockhead and I'm a linux musician. I'm here because I want to see the vision unfold, however you decide for that. Anyone showing up saying "it needs to do this, or be that" should go kick rocks. Blockhead is cool because it isn't those things! I hope that you're emboldened by people who like the tool and the workflows as they emerge, and not pressured by the people who make unfair or impossible demands. Best of luck in all you do!

As a new user, please don’t feel overwhelmed by us, I think I can safely say that everyone here understands that you’re only one man that’s been up to interesting things. I’m having a blast throwing the 3k or so samples I’ve been churning out of Relic Waves over the past year for sound design into it and seeing what I come up with. It’s very good fun and super productive. I see a very good use for this as is so by all means… please carry on just like you have been. For a person like me this is a dream come true already, I’m sure it will just get better as time goes on! Btw you have a very interesting take on what seems like is doing a very similar thing to Relic Waves and seems to produce very interesting, evolving results, it’s very nice to have another source of stuff like that built right in. Very nice!

Michael West

I still think you need a VST Version of this.

David Harmon

There's nothing strange about feeling overwhelmed when more people have eyes on your project, hope you can feel comfortable about it eventually, don't let it cause you any anxiety or sleepless nights :)

Nuno Bento

Noone is making people to do patreon. I came here after seeing it stable on that soundlearn video. Clap for Clap

Mass1nhibited AOE

Good to see CLAP dev moving along! I did a quick survey of a few of my favorite plugin developers and found that out of 12 that support VST3, only 2 are supporting CLAP. Reached out to one about how they are supporting both VST3 and CLAP simultaneously. https://iplug2.github.io/ They use iPlug2. Might want to have a look at it!

Fury-Us

I mean, the standard DAW workflow is only one way to do things. See also trackers like Renoise. It's not going to make sense to everyone. Glad Blockhead is providing something unique!

filterdelaydistort

I'd prefer it as a feature of the block itself, I think

filterdelaydistort

I'm in a similar boat. I've been using DAWs for a couple of years but am still very uncomfortable navigating them. Just can't get it to feel intuitive. I happened upon the Youtube video mentioned in this post and was like 'wow, this makes sense to me for some reason'

Alan

Hey there, I'm absolutely new to music production but have been slowly getting into it - most DAWs seem confusing but I just happen to understand yours the most and I figured I'd stay a while and listen to see what comes up. I have no expectations at all and am just happy to be here, so take everything at your own pace.

TinyInternetPerson

It would be nice if stability and ux would get prioritized over new features for me. The fx lane is the number 1 feature i'm interested in.

Lorenzo Rivosecchi

Hell yeah, always sick to see someone with more influence cover blockhead

jona

You totally deserve it! Can't wait for the next developments

WolfTheWolf

Keep up the good work! We're here because we can see and deeply appreciate the innovation in Blockhead.

Dennis McNulty

So excited for CLAP support, in any form! The bakery is such an insanely goated concept, I'd gladly have it break a thousand plugins to find one that works and have all the non-rt processing powers available

Eepy Supreepy

Pure Awesomeness! Dont let mental hickups distract you from the fact that you are doing all of us a favor here! A great one! :) You are making and evolving a tool for creativity that clicks with a lot of people... thats just WOW! :) Thank you for that! :)

Herr Spiel

I'm so excited to see where this will go.

Peter

As is, it's already one of the most inspiring piece of software I've used in years! thanks for all your work!

Ian Jones

I’ve had the program for a few months, using it on and off, what we have so far clicked and the workflow is very liberating and powerful. Loving it, thank you! Excited to see where it goes!

Felix

I just started using this software and I am already very grateful to you. Please keep yourself. Even if your development does not progress at all after this, I am already satisfied. So please don't be in a hurry and keep working. I leave you with my study using Blockhead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0U2WB1zHZo

waki

it was indeed soundlearn's video for me :D I'm excited to see where this goes. I also think destructive sound editing is a bold move. No second-guessing, just go, create. Keep going.

Emily M

There's just one thing is that some sort of "DC blocker" utility block would be extremely extremely useful

Tyler J

Glad you’re getting the love you deserve

Stewart Bird

I am using Blockhead pretty much daily, it has a great workflow and is very fast to work with I find

Tyler J

You're doing some very cool work. I'm new here, one of the YouTube video posse, but I instantly loved what I saw and wish you all the best, homie.

Ed Lima Music

Really excited about blockhead. Keep up the great work!
