I thought the Dad might be a wrong one as soon as the kid talked about the smiley man. Seemed like classic dissociation which kids do in those situations. As soon as I saw the sofa in the basement that confirmed it for me.

If you notice, there are hints that allude to the foster father being Mr. Smiley the whole episode: In the therapy room, the smile poster mirrors/is next to the Dad's face in the shot with the reflection. The girl uses the daddy doll when talking about Mr. Smiley. In the girl's drawing, the Dad figure and Mr. Smiley figure's faces and eyes are drawn exactly the same, and in a way that denotes trauma in child art: harsh, aggressive lines and color. The "monster" Mr. Smiley Theo sees in bed is made of wood.

Love Theo's character so much, sad that she didn't get to talk to her mum about their sensitivity more than that short vague conversation😭 You're so right about the horror being an exciting(?) wake up every now and then from the deepness of the show- we get so invested in the siblings and their relationships and personal stories it's so easy to forget this is a horror show😂 it's why I love it so much!
