Q&A: How Old is AJ?

How old is AJ supposed to be? It seems like in earlier comics he was maybe 8? But sometimes he seems older. Is there an age you have in mind for him? And will everyone age eventually?

Hey D,

When we started the comic our nephew, who was the inspiration for his character, was 8 and a ball of energy. I think initially we talked about how old AJ was gonna be and we decided he was "somewhere between 8-10". We just didn't want to lock down anything specific because we wanted his adventures in life to be broader than any exact age would limit them. These days in my head he's "10-ish, maybe closer to 12" as we want him to deal with a little more adult stuff and kids grow up so fast they're dealing with it at younger ages.

As for the characters aging, no we don't think so. I leave a little doubt because we have talked about the series following them all as they get older. But for now, I love the idea of letting the family deal with life and its many challenges while keeping them in a specific time in their lives.

Art changes and evolves, we'll just have to see what happens. I think that's a big part of the fun.
