AJ & Magnus the Board Game!

Hey everyone! A few years ago I designed and prototyped a family board game for AJ & Magnus.  The game was about working together as a team to complete objectives.  There's also a second set of game rules that let everyone compete against each other while teaching good sportsmanship.

To get this out is one of our future goals!

What do you think?

It sounds very interesting, especially the cooperative part. I didn't get to play a lot of board games as a kid but when I did, I usually lost. I always wanted a game where I didn't feel gained up on by the other players. Sorry if I'm missing it but is there a way to see the instructions or get a sense of how a game would play out?

I should have explained this better the other day. The game board, pieces, cards, they're all prototypes. What that means is I had to create all the functional pieces and layout for the actual game without needing Simon's time making art for any of it so I used whatever art I had. The reason for this is because the game may change drastically while it's being play tested so any time spent on real art assets may be for nothing. With all of the pieces mocked up with basic assets, the game is playable and through playing it, I'm able to adjust rules as needed. For example, originally the game not only let you select a player character, but a tool to use as well. There were two kinds of tools; one would give the player an advantage in challenging another player in duels, the other would give the player a speed bonus by allowing them to roll two 8-sided die where the tools with the challenge bonus would roll two 6-sided die on each turn. The tools layer of gameplay made things a little more complicated so I ended up stripping it out. But everyone did like the 8-sided die to travel faster so I made that the basic die set. The game will need more testing with more audiences, it's not 100% yet. Once the gameplay and rules are all in place, that's when the game would get art development time. Everything represented in the picture is just a prototype, a mockup, and doesn't at all represent what the final game would look like. Thank you for the questions about the game! I'll make sure to explain things better in the future to not cause confusion.

looks like it will need some more refining visually but I think it looks really cool! :D

Looks righteous, I'm in.

That looks so much fun! I wish I could play it!

Definitely. The pieces and board will need an update. I mocked this up back in 2015. :)

I saw the headline of the email and was about to buy one on the spot for my friend's birthday. I think it's a great idea, especially if you can incorporate lots of references to the comics in there!

I also love coop games, it's much more fun working together. That is awesome. I love the meta idea they're playing a game about THEIR favorite comic ;) When I was working on the prototype, I wrote a few strips about the family and friends playing this new board game. The idea was we could reference the game in the comic and then if people searched for it, there'd be a real game. :)

Looks good! I like the prospect of using teamwork to complete objectives, especially if there's an alternate ruleset for more competitive gameplay. I find myself drawn to coop games more than anything else lately. Also, I had a meta-thought. I pictured the characters playing this game in the comic, but it's based on a comic THEY read about you and your family. Alex, John, and AJ read that comic together because it reminds them of their family. Gave me a chuckle. :D

Definitely! This is "writer art" ;)

Sounds awesome! I'm always on the look out for fun board games. I'd buy it when its complete. I hope the game board has lots of awesome A&J and Magnnus art work on it.

This is a mockup, in all aspects. Nothing here would represent the final product other than the game rules. Maybe next iteration we could find someone with a 3D printer and do little 3d pieces. I agree, figures would be best :)

Bryan & Simon

I think it's a great idea - fits in well with the comic!

Looks promising. A bit concerned about how broad it is (from medieval to sci fi, etc.) and want to know if the final figures will be paper or figures. I'd recommend figures
