It's a mistranslation, kimchi is 辣白菜 in Chinese, this website (chinese google) states that Kimchi is a Korean peninsula food. https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E8%BE%A3%E7%99%BD%E8%8F%9C There are Koreans living in the Northeast region in China so they also make and eat Kimchi

danny, to your point about kpop stans drowning out voices they disagree with being undemocratic, i agree that you may be correct. i also want to challenge the value of those voices being heard at all. given my country nearly saw a coup in the capitol earlier this month, i think it's important to not give fascism and conspiracies a chance to spread as their presence is a threat to society. yes it's an anti-free speech argument, but i'd prefer to curb dangerous ideas before they spread and create catastrophic conditions? sad i missed the aftershow, i'd love to hear your opinions.

before i got back into kpop, i was a socialist organizer here in the states. i actually got back into kpop at first with hopes to talk about socialism with the kpop teens because i saw their organizing potential. kpop fans outside of korea really are some of the most open minded, progressive people. i was happy to see that many of them were already super into progressive politics. i don't organize as a hobby anymore (i do it less radically for work now), but i do still get excited when i see kpop fans utilizing their collective power for causes they believe in. i hope to continue to see it in the future.

I think that if you had to use so much money and power to tell your people that something is from your country (like kimchi is chinese) it just tells that it is not because nobody believes it in the first place you have tell it over and over again to them and then they believe. I think something is wrong with chinese people when they start to believe that something is from China and promote that stuff as chinese when they have had nothing to do with the matter before hearing it in the media

So the program Sing Again has some established performers Sojung from Ladies Code made it to the last ~6? people starting from ~70. Btw here is her version on the American jazz standard "You've Changed" w/ a talented pianist from her utube channel https://youtu.be/41pMrzqeBu8

I totally agree with Danny throughout this whole aftershow.

캐서린 (Morton)

I totally agree Danny, back in the good ol days people actually talked to each other face to face. They even enjoyed it sometimes. lol

캐서린 (Morton)

I wish Korean culture would be left alone by China and respected by the whole world. I know that is like a dream lol. Korean pride!

캐서린 (Morton)

I want to see both Day6 and NCT127 on the show because I like both of those groups a lot and of course their music. My NCT127 album always hypes me up.

There is a great article by Elliot Sang about why K-pop fandoms are so effective at creating change and what political grassroots organizations can learn from them. I'll link it here for anyone interested. https://medium.com/@elliotjoaquinsangestevez/the-revolution-will-look-like-a-k-pop-fandom-2444604aa64

For a lot of Kpop fans, the active nature of supporting Kpop in the west is a form of fighting structural racism, misogyny, and homophobia. The push of by Kpop fans to force the western music industry to change is inherently political because of the culture of racism in the United States. I think this is why Kpop fans who are active in their "stanning" make the connection to use Kpop as a way to voice their political opinions. In the mind of these fans politics and Kpop fit into the same category. I dont think this is good or bad for Kpop. It just is, what it is.

KPOP FANDOM IN POLITICS – I think taking over disagreeable hashtags by posting fan media is not the best way to protest. Protestors should post an actual argument, criticism or statement (even if it is just “FAKE NEWS!”). If someone doesn’t know what the protest is about, then they should find out. Mobbing by fan media will accomplish the goal of drowning the hashtag, but it is not persuading or educating anyone about the protest, and may actually be creating hate against Kpop which would be sad. Still, I do understand why people are so quick to shut down anything related to pro-Trump sentiments. Trump ran his presidency like a reality TV show and incited an insurrection, which ultimately led to multiple deaths and could have led to something even worse. Need I say more? Now, with his more fanatic followers, Trump has risen to the status of cult leader. See the recent news articles about his opening an office to advance his agenda; the support he’s continuing to receive from certain elected officials who should be committed to a mental institution; and his new t-shirts with a symbol correlating closely with a Nazi insignia (see https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-election/donald-trump-nazi-tshirt-symbol-campaign-america-first-a9600466.html; btw, the whole symbol should be examined, not just the eagle). What’s even scarier is that I actually know someone who has been radicalized by Trump to the point of hysteria. Perhaps this is also a result of the prolonged pandemic. People are getting crazier each day.

KPOP FANDOM “OPENESS” – My guess (since I have not conducted a formal survey) is that a number of international Kpop fans may be bilingual or multilingual (in any language), or used to subtitles/translations now that more foreign media is readily available. I propose this because I am bilingual and enjoy foreign media. Watching movies or listening to music in other languages, and reading subtitles or translations is not a big deal. If I like what I see or hear, then I will become a fan. I don’t believe this necessarily makes me more left or right.

CHINA – I am wondering why China even bothers with this type of cultural appropriation. Either because China’s people are finally caving under the pandemic so they deliberately incite the ire of S. Koreans, or China’s people have lost pride in their own culture so they are desperately making petty claims about other cultures? Unfortunately, these antics only make China's people and government the subject of global ridicule. Alternatively, it is possible that the Chinese government is just being reactive. China excels at public shaming and wields it as a weapon. (See public shaming in action at https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-51188669.) Of course, this can be a double-edged sword. Even if a cultural claim is trivial or obviously wrong, the government is under pressure to support the claim if there is a public outcry. Whatever the case may be, perhaps S. Korea's only recourse is to continue to stand its ground and diversify geographically so that it is less reliant on China. However, let's be real, China is a huge market that cannot be ignored so easily.

Sofina....in regard to the US, you are spot on. My "govt job" I work on Capitol Hill. Everything you said is correct. The female that posted the tweet also voted to invalidate votes. I honestly cant stand the GOP. Their quest for white supremacy is disgusting. I'm glad the hashtag was highjacked.

Shinee, Wayv/superm Seventeen (Some random smattering of exo, whoever is available) Pentagon Bts , All presented by heechul (tbh I just wanna see how these groups would interact and what they would do for the crossover stages) Also I’d love for a band spin-off version Day6 Nflying Ftisland Akmu (kind of band kind of not. Also I forgot to write I can’t wait for the comebacks hyuna is one of my favourite female artists, such an empowering figure, also got me into one of my favourite groups Pentagon though sadly we all know how that ended for one of the members but I’m so glad that they’re happy there and that he is supporting her and she supporting supporting him and that she overcame her illness or at least got a little better enough to perform and to have a comeback which I cannot wait for because she always makes bops.

KINGDOM- (I mean in my opinion, though as a universe a little biased, pentagon should’ve been the winners of road to kingdom with onf in 2nd) I feel like for groups at that caliber you could have maybe ACE, abcix (they have daehwi from wanna one) like in queendom they had a surprise pick of Park bom you could have a surprise pick and have a band like day6 (jyp though) or another soloist like Kim woosung (from the Rose) or Crush (I’d say Eric nam but he’s big international idk exactly how big he is in Korea). There have been many groups rumoured to be in the selection such as seventeen and honestly I think monsta x is a good addition and I think enhyphen would be a good addition too but big hit would never. Txt isn’t a viable option bc that would just skew the vote completely but would be very interesting though big hit wouldn’t do it. Someone like way v or if they did allow mixed either AKMU or KARD Would kill it. -POLITICS- I think in the west and the international K-pop fandom that it is almost inherent to be on the political left at least when you’re from the US or Europe and while there are a few who are right it is the vast majority who are left as we in the west have been conditioned that our culture and music is superior and why would you ever want to listen to something in a language that you couldn’t understand. with the way we’ve been conditioned simply accepting another culture and enjoying another culture that has been deemed as inferior and not being xenophobic (while it shouldn’t be) is considered left pushing the fandom even further left. As well I think youth in the age of social media today are exposed to more political rhetoric from a younger age thus politicising them especially in the west where there is already the dichotomy of left and right that is so stark at the minute meaning you’re either very heavily one way or very heavily the other and it just so happens that K-pop is on the left. Public displays of one’s political affiliation is common place on social media in the west and so is arguing between the two sides so this is just another way to argue against somebody’s opinion but not giving them the respect whether they deserve it or not of a response. we’ve also been conditioned in fandom that in order to not appear like crazed hysteric teenage girls we need to prove our worth by doing good and so fandoms will organise charities and fundraisers and things like that, getting invested in causes and those causes are very often political or have political undertones. It also happens that the overlap with the K-pop community in the west and POC is quite large and in general because right-wing people tend to be xenophobic left-wing pocs are more common and thus are more common western fandom I think in this case particularly (though not in every case) it was appropriate because they were trying to drown out not a valid concern or critique from somebody who has a different opinion of them but are meaningless HASHTAG Created By Right-Wing Trump Supporters In Order To Further Destabilise the US which was attempting to frame itself as a legitimate critique. It would be something if the political situation in the US was different than it was at the minute but with the way that Trump has been blatantly calling everything false and fake and trying to discredit the voting system and the electoral system, resulting in the attempted coup this was obviously done in bad faith and so I feel that fan cams while not the most glamorous way of drowning them out is one of the more effective ways. -CHINA- I totally agree that China is exerting far too much influence or attempting to do so and attempting to rewrite history perhaps as much in the fashion of Japanese imperialism as you suggested taking and adopting bits of things from other countries to call their own and retroactively say that they always were theirs. I find it truly abhorrent that a country‘s government would exert so much control over a company as to the point where a foreign streamer saying something that everybody else on Earth deems to be true would be the cited reason as to why she was fired from a company in China. It is truly mind blowing the power that the CCP has and while it is a large superpower and Korea and K-pop would benefit from being in that market it is only one market and with kpop being successful worldwide now then perhaps the former dependency on fans from China may not be needed. Though if we were speaking in terms of K-pop eventually the K-pop bubble will burst in the West and so they will need a large , probably Asian , source of income and that will most likely have to come in the form of China as I doubt 15-20 years from now k-pop as we truly know it will exist, it may take A different form perhaps than the one we see it now or the sort of style and concept of K-pop may become more democratised through other countries so the sort of style and typical kpop system that we see in kpop won’t be as unique. and so when that happens or if that happens China will need to be a place that Kpop can look to For income Sorry for the long spiel I just find stuff like the China bit and the politics bit very interesting as I study history and international studies (so like international relations economics cooperation and communication) at university at the moment and I’m currently doing ground work for a assignment in Soft Power which is something S. Korea has a lot of right now. I also finished one before the Christmas Break on government censorship in which I looked into both Japan China so that was fun...
