(early access) It's Okay to Not Be Okay [Aftershow Review / Best Kdrama of 2020]

Lol I keep on saying 'It's Ok to be Not Ok'. Why does this stick better. Well please excuse me, I usually call the drama by it's Korean name 사이코지만 괜찮아, so i got confused there.

Regardless fight me if you think another drama beats this one in 2020. Jk, personally among the ones i've seen and tried Its OK to Not Be OK caught my attention the most for the following reasons I stated in the video!

Do you agree?

You probably saw her name written using the international pronunciation standard. That is a totally different method used universally to describe the sound a letter makes. It's not actually a romanization of words, but of pronunciation. This version is used for language learning in textbooks and such all over the world. It is not used to romanize syllabaries. Even the Roman alphabet can be translated into that to help people learn to pronounce things.

As far as I know there is no "one true" romanization of korean or japanese Names. I've also seen "Sŏ Yechi".

I have a question that I have asked before but maybe it was missed? Netflix spells Seo Ye-ji’s name wrong. They spell it Seo Yea-ji. Does this bother anyone in S. Korea? It bothers me... at first it was only on the page for this show, but then they actually went back into the page for “Save Me” and CHANGED the spelling of her name from the correct way to the incorrect way. Am I mistaken? Or if this fucked up and a little bit disrespectful?

No drama beat this one until Flower of Evil came along. They are currently tied in a dead draw IMO. Coincidence that the other best mental health drama of all time (It's Okay That's Love) begins with the same words? I think not. Anyway, IOTNBO came out of the gate ready to destroy with camera work and cinematography on a level we don't see in K Drama. The story cleverly allowed us to root for the "bad" girl by use of magical realism. It presented a person on the autism spectrum as a character, not a plot device or caricature. Sang-tae was not just spitting out words like an idiot savant. That's a misunderstanding that people have about autism spectrum and other atypical neurological conditions - that the lack of expression means lack of feeling. People with autism have the same feelings that everyone else has. Their world is just as complex as anyone else's. They simply have a different way to communicate. This was an incredibly heartwarming story. And those abs. That waist. The clothes. The forehead. The acting!!! Just perfection. I hope you are watching Flower of Evil now? It cured my depression when IOTNBO was over.

I felt like some scenes in the second last episode when on for a little too long, however, was one of the best K-Dramas I have seen so far. Loved how well the characters were written and having it set in the psychiatric hospital enabled the supporting charters to also have more depth in dealing with their own trauma. Also enjoyed how they were able to break into humous scenes to break up the intense moments. Totally agree with you in terms of casting, the lead actress is now my most favorite

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this drama. To me the most special part was the empathy and openness towards mental issues and developmental disabilities but not even that but the huge fact that they were human and lovable and independent and worthy and had deep character and connections DESPITE them. I have heard in particular that it’s hard in korea for people with these issues so I was just happy to see the positive representation there. Great content! I would have loved a whole separate episode about the actor who played Sangtae that story was so great. 🥰

As for the missing character resolution - both the patient pretending to be Mun-young's mom and Je-soo - that does seem like really big flaws/holes. However, the writer is so detailed in every other way, that it makes me think she did it on purpose. But why? Not knowing what happened to the patient, I can chalk that up to "you don't always get to know." But not knowing Jae-soo's backstory I can't understand. At one point I thought the story might be insinuating that Jae-soo was in love with Gang-tae, thus followed him around, jealousy, and the final "break up" scene where Gang-tae thanks him and frees him from following him around... but that seems like stretching it. Even if that WAS the story, not knowing hisJae-soo's family history or even his history with Gang-tae left me wanting to know more. -- THAT SAID: best drama since Goblin!! And I must say, my new favorite of all time!

DAVID! LOVED this drama! Subject and message, as you said, is so encouraging and educational. The writing is just phenomenal - the layers of incorporating children's stories and real-life analogies was brilliant. The acting was ON POINT. You are right that Oh Jung-se is the MVP. Kim Soo-hyun and Seo Ye-ji lived up to their characters and were brilliant. All three had massive character growth, but Sang-tae's growth is what made us SOB. Both the "reading my book to my mom's tree" scene and the "good bye" scene had me shaking and crying with sympathy and pride. Jung-se's acting as an autistic man was consistent and honest, and the writer did a good job of showing growth but maintaining his "autism-ness," which made it feel real.

Your recaps and analysis will always be my favorite videos.

Ooohhh, I just finished my Chinese drama Go Go Squid yesterday and was on the lookout for the next drama. It's okay is high on the list. So I only watched 30 seconds of your video, saw the spoiler alert and am now closing Youtube and moving to Netflix to go watch It's okay... See you in 4 days! Then I can watch the review. Keep on making great video's, you guys rock. And a very lame "greetings from sunny The Netherlands (aka the home of artisanal cookies )"!
